iOS 17.6 FLAC issues

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Bug Reports › iOS 17.6 FLAC issues

  • alecos 1 year, 8 months ago

Hi, a user report me that after upgrade to Ios 17.6 the player can’t play (both Chrome and Safari).
Of course played perfect before the upgrade.

The buffer runs but the player stuck at 0:00
She said everything upgraded (also browsers) and Iphone just restarted many times.

Please can you give a look?
    Best!

Hi, it’s urgent: many users are contacting my assistance – the player doesn’t work if upgraded to iOS 17.6

    Can you fix ASAP please?
I’ve a subscription service, it’s a great problem for us.

    Hello Alecos,

I can confirm that after upgrading to iOS 17.6 on iPhone 11 our FLAC demo track at https://foliovision.com/player/demos/mp3-in-fv-player#flac no longer plays.

However it does not play even if opened in the web browser directly. It also does not show the proper audio track duration there. And it does not play if saved.

So this seems like a core iOS issue with FLAC audio, although their change log does not mention any changes related to audio codecs:

    • iOS 17.6 Beta Release Notes
    • Safari 17.6 Beta Release Notes

I was not able to find any information about FLAC support being dropped in iOS 17.6 nor 18.

And the bugtracker for Webkit (the core of Safari web browser) does not mention recent issues with FLAC: https://trac.webkit.org/search?q=flac

Do you also have MP3 versions of the audio tracks available? Maybe we could detect iOS 17.6 and fall back to MP3 if it’s provided as the alternative format.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks for your help.

We can create an alternative MP3, but how can I put it in my playlists as alternative?

    Hello Alecos,

We have submitted the bug to the Safari browser developers: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275895

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks!

Do you think you will develop a workaround (an alternative field to link MP3 instead of FLAC if recognized 17.6) or not?

    Best (and thanks!)

    Hi alecos.

Probably not. We’re oping that release 17.6 will include support for flac playback. If not, we’ll consider adding the flac libraries inside FV Player.

Hi! Does the beta n2 17.6 has solved the issue?

    Best regards

    Hello alecos,

I tried and it still wouldn’t play. The release notes do not mention FLAC either: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/ios-ipados-release-notes/ios-ipados-17_6-release-notes

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Alec,

We won’t be able to test the betas. We are happy to test the final release. So great using Apple’s iOS and macOS the last seven years. Every year many new bugs and very few fixes. Trillions of dollars of shareholder value instead of software quality control.

I’m a long time Apple user which is how I know. I’ve started a move to Fedora 40 and LineageOS this summer.

    Hi, beta 4 worked.
Now the final release 17.6 seems not working with flac.

    Can you test it ASAP?

My streaming service seems down :(

    Hi alecos,

Our tests indicate that flac plays in release 17.6. What gave you the notion that flac does not play in release 17.6?

Hi! Sorry for delay but I’ve contacted my subscribers, and only today I got all replies.
They all had 17.6 beta 3 version (not 17.6 stable).

    So, they made me crazy…

    Everything seems working well! Thanks.
