Videos don’t play on older iPhones

I have two iphones both with iOS 15.02. A video plays on the newer SE but not on the iPhone 8. What would account for this?

Also can you tell me what MediaConvert settings would be correct for viewing on mobile devices. As far as I can tell, the settings I should use are QVBR: 7, bitrate: 1,500 Kbps.

    Thank you.

    Hello Apasho,

thank you for reaching out to us!

Is the video in question a basic mp4 or a different format?

As for MediaConvert output settings, we recommend using the ones you will find in the step 14 of this guide: https://foliovision.com/player/securing-your-video/mediaconvert-encrypted-hls-guide

HLS switches qualities automatically. Unless the user changes manually (in which case it gets remembered as a preference), an appropriate quality for mobile device will be picked.

    Thanks,
    Maria

The file format is m3u8. Later today I try using mp4 and let you know the result.

I uploaded a 360p MP4 file and used it for the mobile video in the FV Player and it plays on the old iPhone. That seems to solve this issue; I will use MP4 files instead of HLS files for mobile.

Unfortunately my previous test was not with the correct videos. The videos still fail to load even when using the small video files (101.5 MB). What I am seeing in the browser network tab is that the 360p MP4 are attempted to be loaded. It could be a lack of memory.

    Hello Apasho,

we did receive reports of MP4 videos not playing on iPhone with iOS 14 or 15. These videos wouldn’t play even if opened directly in the iPhone Safari browser. It really seems like the modern iOS versions have some issues with the reliable MP4 playback.

Please check your videos using the Video Checker feature of FV Player: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/how-to-use-video-checker

I would like to see the report for your MP4 file and also the HLS M3U8 stream as so far there were no issues with HLS playback on iPhones.

    Thanks,
    Martin

The videos are ok. It must be the issue with iOS that is causing the problem. Than you for your help.

Video meta data: moov-atom not found at the start of the file. Please move the meta data to the start of video, otherwise it might have a slow start up time when using Flash. Plese check the "How do I fix the bad metadata (moov) position?" question in FAQ.

    Hello Apasho,

I found the moov checker was broken. It’s fixed now, the moov position is at 676914 byte which should work.

I wonder which part of these MP4 format details could be responsible for the iPhone playback issue.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I’ve updated the plugin and on the old iPhone, cleared the browser data and tested it, yet there was no change. Still the video will not play.

    Martin 4 years ago

    Hello Apasho,

I did not fix anything for these iPhones, I just fixed the video checker. I’m sorry it was not clear in my last message.

    Thanks,
    Martin
