force download of videos

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › force download of videos

The download link button functionality has varying results in different browsers.
Clicking on the link(s) on https://foliovision.com/player/demos/download-link, makes
    – Firefox plays the video in a new window (rather than giving a popup box)
    – Chrome and Opera want to download a html page (right clicking on the link gives popup box though)
    – Edge gives you a dialog (unfortunately I don;t normally use Edge)
How can I force the link to produce a download popup?

    Hi Marius,

Thanks for your report. I tested it in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and all worked ok – clicking on the download button opened the download pop-up box. Which versions were you using for testing and on what OS?

There are, however, some issues in Opera and IE 11, so we’ll look into that.

    Thanks,
    Eduard

I’m stuck on Firefox 56 (that’s another issue) 64 bit running on Windows 10. I don’t have IE installed (so tested with Edge). The videos are stored on Amazon S3. These are stock videos which I would like to be downloadable.
Anyway, I’ve done more research & testing on this, and it’s far more tricky than I suspected.
With my Firefox, even changing the setting to “ask” for mp4 type file, doesn’t work. However, changing the content-disposition of the file and/or using the download attribute on the link seem to help.
Apparently, forcing download is not possible at all on Chrome (without writing some special PHP/Javascript as a workaround – not for me). Opera 50 seems to display the same behaviour as Chrome.
    So much for that idea.
Without opening a new thread, the issue I face now is incorporating the download button into a playlist and/or the lightbox popup (which I notice has been raised in other posts before).
I’m not making much progress on this download thing,..

    Hi Marius,

I discussed this issue with the programming department and the main issue here is, that the download link feature should be available only for the logged-in users. If you are not logged in you should get an HTML page with “Error processing download” message.

We are going to improve this, so the users that are not logged in won’t be able to see the buttons at all.

    Thanks,
    Eduard

    Hello Marius,

FV Player Pro 0.9.14 will restrict the download button to only show to logged in users. The idea behind that is to be able to check the user membership level before allowing download – however we are not there yet.

I’m not having issues with FV Player download button in Chrome 63 or Safari 11 or Opera 50 – I click the button and it downloads the video.

I can see the issue in Firefox 57 though. Problem is that they prioritize the Content-Disposition data in the HTTP header of the downloaded file over this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/a#attr-download

I was looking for a JavaScript workaround and for now I had to simply let FV Player Pro show a message like ‘Please click again with right mouse button and select “Save As…”‘ if the user hits the download button in Firefox, IE or Safari below version 11.

This improvement is part of the Beta branch of FV Player Pro 0.9.14 which will be released today. You can check it here when you are logged in.

We are also working (as you noted) on the download button which will appear right there in the player which will work in playlist and lightbox.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Marius,

thank you for posting the details of your setup privately.

We were recently solving some video download issues on one of the websites. In the end we added a KeyCND pull zone in front of the video storage server, which reduced its traffic, improved speed and it also has a setting for force download.

Also, you mentioned you use the fv_player_pro_boxElement class. That comes from Colorbox which we use for lightbox. We will be changing that to Fancybox soon.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I’m using the fv_player_pro_boxElement class and it appears to have stopped working, what replaced it?

    Martin 7 years ago

    Hello Matt,

the fv_player_pro_boxElement class used to be on video splash screen which opens the lightbox when clicked. But also on the images which were opened with lightbox.

If you used it to style these video splash screens, you can use .flowplayer.lightbox-starter instead.

    Thanks,
    Martin
