Download from Vimeo Showcase results in html file download

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Download from Vimeo Showcase results in html file download

  • Christian 3 years, 7 months ago

    Hey,

so I added a vimeo collection ID, resulting in FV player correctly generating video album view, and all other features seem to work fine BUT the download function. In your description it states: “This feature lets you download (…) a Vimeo video” and “It does also works with playlists.”

The button is there, and clicking on it creates the “Please click again (…)Download Linked File” message. Doing this creates an html download name by the Vimeo collection number.

The link looks like this, *** inserted by me: “https://***?fvplayer_download=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2Fshowcase%2F88***43&post_id=2**9&expire=163***7435&signature=4b5***e1&fvplayer_download_external=1”

So my question is: Did I just understand the feature wrong? Or is there something I am missing? Tried this in release and Beta version, in Chrome, Firefox and the Edge “Browser”.

Settings on vimeo are: Videos private, Showcase privacy “anyone”, token settings public, private, Video files

My goal would be to have the videos in a showcase shown on my site, and then have a download link below for each video in the playlist.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Hello Christian,

I see, we do not support these Vimeo channels for downloads. We will try to add support for it. It shouldn’t be too difficult.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,

    sounds great, thank you!
I just noticed, that I maybe confused you with some words: I used the term “collection” when what I menat was “showcases”, but I think you already knew ;)

    Hello Christian,

we have worked on adding this feature. It would be great if you could test it before it’s a part of the official FV Player release.

To do that first deactivate and delete the FV Player Pro plugin you are using (no data will be lost), then hit “Install Pro extension” at the top of the wp-admin -> Settings -> FV Player screen. That will reinstall the plugin and give you the update version.

Then switch to the Beta release using the steps from here: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/switching-fv-player-pro-to-beta

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,

    thanks for the beta!
I just installed the updated Pro and it seems to work fine. Will now let my users test with all their diffrent devices and browsers and report back in case of issues :)
Just an idea for this feature: How about letting the save as – dialogue not suggest [vimeovideoid].mp4 as name, but instead the actual title of the video title?

    Hello Christian,

we cannot change that as the video is getting saved from some other domain. The web browsers block such behavior, otherwise this could be achieved by using this attribute on the link HTML code:

    <a href="..." download="Your video name">...</a>

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,

thanks for the answer, but confuses me a bit. While I understand, that you get the filename directly from the other server, the video titles are “known” by your plugin as they build the names for the list of download links. I used another addon before switching to your clearly better one, but said plugin did indeed save videos by the name of the video title. Would be very nice if you could take another look at that, thank you :)

    Hello Christian,

since the videos are downloaded from Vimeo servers, FV Player Pro running on your website cannot tell the web browser what file name it should use for download of the video. This is blocked in the web browser to ensure online security and privacy.

If that other plugin did manage this then it was probably downloading the file using PHP and then passing it back to user’s browser from the website domain. That could work, but it might prevent users from resuming the broken downloads, lower the download speed and put extra strain on your server.

    Thanks,
    Martin
