Any way to auto-generate a splash image?

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Any way to auto-generate a splash image?

  • David 10 years ago

I know that sites like YouTube and Vimeo will automatically generate splash images for videos.

We’re hosting video (.mp4) on Amazon S3, is there anyway for us to do this through FV Flowplayer? We just have way too many videos to make splash images manually.

    Hello David,

this would be possible, but your PHP would have to be allowed to execute the ffmpeg binary on the server and it would have to be present. There is also ffmpeg PHP module

    Thanks,
    Martin

Will FV Flowplayer automatically hook into ffmpeg once it is present? Or would we have to modify the plugin somehow?

Alternatively, is there a way to auto-start then auto-stop a video at the first frame upon page load?

    Hello David,

we would have to code that whole function to use ffmpeg to grab the first video frame.

The first frame of video can be displayed, but it greatly depends on the web browser. Since we are supporting also YouTube and Vimeo, there is a lot of things to check before we would enable this.

    Thanks,
    Martin

We’d like to try it, what would we need to do to enable?
If it doesn’t work we might just tryout JW Player.
    Thanks!

    Hello David,

we would have to put up preload=”metadata” for the video tag and stop using the is-splash class. Then the first video frame would show up, although in a lot of our videos it’s black as the video fades in.

We will have to test this out carefully before adding a setting for it into our plugin.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Has this been resolved? There are a great many players on the market that will show the first frame of the video or give me an option at least to say at what second to grab the first frame of the video. Can this not be added or do my users have to live with a blank screen?

    Hello Jeff,

we are working on adding tool which will let you grab the splash screen from any video position which you like.

The first video frame is often black and not all browsers support it. It would also mean more traffic on your video hosting server/CDN. But with FV Player 7 we could check that too, seems like it might make it work for mobile, but I wonder what part of video has to load for this to work.

    Thanks,
    Martin
