Safari Ad Blocker Issue

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Safari Ad Blocker Issue

    Hello guys,

I has been testing your plugin for some time and I really like it. I found a strange problem: FV Player videos works fine on desktop but the same video gives ‘HTML5 video file not found’ error on mobile. I’m testing it on safari for iPhone (latest version). This is an example

    (redacted)

Check any of these videos on desktop and then the same on mobile, and you’ll see the error.

    Any idea about this?

    Thank you 🙂
    Paul K

    Hello Paul,

I loaded your test post and I could play the video without issues on iPhone with iOS 15.7 and 16.4 with Safari and on Android 13 with Chrome.

Please let us know what device, operating system and browser you are using. The thing to check is whether the videos play when opened in phone browser directly.

However I noticed a problem when using iOS 17 – the forced native fullscreen causes the video to play without picture. You can hear the sound, but there is no picture unless you close the fullscreen playback and enable it again. We will get that fixed.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

Thanks a lot for your response, I appreciate it.

I made a short video (redacted) to show you that: 1) videos won’t work on safari for iPhone with iOS 17, but all videos works fine with Chrome for iPhone. I tested in several devices including my girlfriend’s one.

All videos works fine on safari for iMac. The problem seems to be only with safari mobile, I always get: ‘HTML5 video file not found’ and it won’t allow me to exit from the player, I need to close the window and enter the website again.

Not sure exactly when this started but everything was working fine about 2 months ago.

Please let me know if you want me to provide more info, data, details or examples.

Pls check the video below, it a screen recording. First with Safari, then with Chrome. It’s an iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 17.

    Thanks and take care,

    Paul K

    Hello Paul,

Please try to open your video file URL directly in your iPhone Safari browser and see if it plays that way.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

I confirm the video plays perfectly from the original url on safari but I get error ‘HTML5 video file not found’ when the same video uses your plugin.

I think I found the problem: I use a Safari ad-blocker extension called ‘FireFox Focus’. I just turned it off and the videos works fine (using FV Player). This is the plugin: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-focus-ios

Theoretically, I should only block ads but it seems it also affects your plugin. If I use the original URL the video plays fine. Hope it helps.

    Thank you,

    Hello Paul,

I put up Firefox Focus on iPhone with iOS 15.7 and I could see the video won’t play.

    The developer console would say:

Content blocker prevented frame displaying (redacted) from loading a resource from https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/…/pu/vid/808×720/….mp4?tag=12

However when I tried to play the video at https://foliovision.com/player/demos/amazon-open-bucket which is loaded from https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/fv-player-unprotected/dominika-960-31_HD.mp4 it would play without issues.

So it does not seem to just block any video out there.

It also does not matter if the video is inserted using FV Player or using bare HTML5 video tag.

I think Firefox Focus does not like that the https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/…./pu/vid/808×720/….mp4?tag=12 video is served with the following HTTP headers:

    access-control-allow-origin: *

But there is no way FV Player can avoid that.

    Thanks,
    Martin
