Has anyone been able to get Rich Snippets to work with FV Worpress Flowplayer embedded video?

    Hello Foliovision Support Team,

    Yet another question…

Has anyone been able to get Rich Snippets to work with FV WordPress Flowplayer embedded video?

I have tried adding Schema.org structured markup around the shortcode, and submitting a video sitemap, but this doesn’t appear to work … Googles Structured Data Testing tool doesn’t recognize the content as a video.

Just wondering if anyone has done this successfully before.

    Jason

    Hello Jason,

the schema.org structure markup needs to appear around the individual FV Flowplayer HTML tags.

We can add that in one of the next versions. The easiest setup requires the video title, description and thumbnail. So we could use the post title, post meta description or excerpt and video splash image for that. But I guess it would make sense to customize the title and description in the shortcode, so we will have a talk about that in our team.

We will also check the video sitemap. I guess it would be very useful if our plugin could put that together automatically.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Jason,

we decided that we want to see if the schema.org markup actually works before we put it into our plugin. We create a test page for this and will check it again in a week or so to see if our video appears.

We are very interested in the video sitemap. We will see if we can integrate with some other plugin or will make our plugin self-sufficient.

    Thanks,
    Martin

How did our schema experiment go Martin?

    Hello Alec,

it’s up, but not showing up in Google yet. So I added EmbedURL. I used the post URL, so we will see if that’s enough.

Google requires that you enter either video file URL (URL pointing to the actual video media file) or embed URL (a URL pointing to a player for the specific video), so perhaps the post URL will be fine.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thought I would chime in just in case my experience can help in any way.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to try using the Yoast video SEO plugin and,
so far, I’ve had no luck getting rich snippets to show up for my video
    content.

The Structured Data Testing Tool on Google Webmaster Tools won’t show video
rich snippets, and I thought that this meant that I was doing something
wrong until I read an article that confirmed that the Structured Data
Testing Tool was incapable of showing video rich snippets. I’d link to that
    article but I can’t find it again…

So – like you – I decided to wait and see if my videos would show up in
search results as rich snippets. After at least two weeks, I can search for
and see my videos on the SERP’s but – as of right now – no rich snippets.

You can see the markup that Yoast inserted by examining the source code
    here: ‘http://www…..com/how-to-create-a-project-charter/’

I don’t know why it isn’t working. I did find this article which might
contain the answer, but there’s no way of knowing.

    https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1093493

I half suspect that “Is your marked-up content hidden from users?” might be
the answer … elements such as the title and description probably need to
show on the page … if that’s the case, your plugin would have to render
this information, not hide it, and give the site owner the ability to style
    it…

But – you see – that’s the trouble with google … there’s no way to know
why the rich snippets aren’t showing. Would it really be that hard to
provide us with a tool that says, “we will not show this rich snippet
    because…?”

Anyhow, I know my note didn’t provide any answers but thought I’d share my
experience just in case something in there might be useful…

    Hello Jason,

yes, that’s roughly the same experience with Google as we have. They simply provide little or no support for the products.

Your page appears to really use a nice schema.org/VideoObject markup. These tags are metatags, so of course they are not visible. What Google means is that they might not index the video, if the entire video is not visible – so nobody should be able to promote his video by placing it into some hidden HTML on every page or so.

    Thanks,
    Martin
