Amazon S3 hosted ideos won't play on iOS & Android after I change S3 permissions

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Amazon S3 hosted ideos won't play on iOS & Android after I change S3 permissions

  • magentawave 9 years, 2 months ago

Sorry if this appears twice but the thread I started a few minutes ago seems to have disappeared and on my profile pages it says that I never started or have subscribed to a thread so I’m trying this again…

I’m using the latest version of OptimizePress and the default video player in it is Flowplayer. My Amazon S3 hosted videos play on all desktop and laptop browsers AND iOS and Android devices. However, when I change the permissions so the videos play on my site ONLY and can not be downloaded then they no longer play on iOS and Android.

    S3 BUCKET POLICY PERMISSIONS:
Grantee: Me – Open/Download – View Permissions – Edit Permissions (all boxes checked)
    S3 VIDEO FILE PERMISSIONS:
    Same as above

If I change the individual video file permissions to the ones below then the videos will play on iOS and Android but that also means they can be played on other websites and can be downloaded and I don’t want that…

Grantee: Me – Open/Download – View Permissions – Edit Permissions (all boxes checked)
Grantee: Everyone – Open/Download (one box checked)

Then, with the permissions shown above, I created a bucket policy (using Amazons own code) that’s supposed to restrict the videos to playing on my site only but it doesn’t do anything differently than the first permissions above can do without the bucket policy which means the videos won’t play on iOS and Android.

Does anyone know how I can get the default Flowplayer that comes with Optimizepress to play videos on my site ONLY on all desktop and laptop browsers, plus iOS and Android – and will NOT allow downloading of the file? (I asked the people at Optimizepress and they don’t know. I have tried many combinations of Permissions and bucket policies and none work the way I want.)

    Thank you!

    Hello magentawave,

sorry about the trouble, we figured out your forums submissions were caught as spam by Akismet.

Here’s our guide to restricting video downloads with Amazon S3: https://foliovision.com/player/secure-amazon-s3-guide

However what you can do there is pretty basic. We are preparing a whole article on this issue. We are also in process of adding support for encrypted HLS streams – even if you download these they won’t play without the required deciphering key which only your site can control.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello magentawave,

we have a working Encrypted HLS stream with key distribution via our player: https://foliovision.com/player/demos/encrypted-hls-stream

Next we need to document the process and add a tool to generate the decryption keys into our plugin.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    HI Martin,

Do you have a time table on when you will be done with the documentation and the tool to generate the decryption keys? I’m doing a product launch on June 22nd and would sure like to have my videos encrypted by then before we launch :)

    Thanks,

    Joel

    Hello Joel,

it’s almost ready, but we are working on a system to make installing FV Player Pro beta versions easier for you. Once that is ready, you should be able to just install our latest beta version which will have the feature in it.

    Thanks,
    Martin

i have the same issue on android only. videos will not play on android with the bucket origin referrer policy. Once I remove the referrer policy the videos play fine on android. Does android somehow strip the referrer headers?

    Martin 9 years ago

    Hello ben,

thank you for sharing the details of your issue. I checked Google Chrome on Android 4.3 and it sends the HTTP referer for both mp4 and m3u8.

Are you using the stock Android browser? What version? It might not be sending the referer information for neither mp4 nor m3u8. Unfortunately there is no debugging tool for it, so I’m not able to check this easily.

    Thanks,
    Martin

hi martin, thanks for the reply. i am pleased with the response times from everyone there at folio vision and will be purchasing a pro license in the near future.

the issue appears on android 6.0.1 using chrome, samsung, and firefox browsers. the video is just blank and nothing happens. works perfectly on chrome on mac or pc, iPhone, iPad.

we had to remove the bucket policy to make it work, but this is not ideal.

    Hello ben,

is that a MP4 or a HLS video? Please let us know. It’s unfortunate that Android 6.0.1 handles this worse than Android 4.3 (when I can confirm it works at least in Chrome).

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Joel,

the beta version of FV Player Pro with HLS encryption feature is almost out, it’s just too late today to make a new release.

In the meantime we added new steps for encrypted HLS into the documentation: https://foliovision.com/player/video-hosting/securing-your-video/hls-stream There are some screenshots to be added and some more testing to do.

    Thanks,
    Martin

That’s great! Is it possible to use the Vimeo hls links for this? I already have Amazon setup but it’s still a mystery to how much streaming will be for it. Anyway I’m looking forward to trying it out.

    Martin 9 years ago

    Hello John,

the encrypted HLS stream has to be encoded as such. The Vimeo HLS streams won’t work with this, it won’t allow you to add extra protection for these.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Amazon S3 video(mp4) in not working on Android (Samsung) default browser. Video are working fine on all Window desktop browser, IOS browser and also chrome on android.Even get start working if I set permission open to everyone on my site.

But when I change S3 permission restricted to my site.It stops working on Android default browser.
Can you provide any solution so that I can fix this issue? It’s urgent call to fix so I cannot change to HLS.

    Hello Neeti,

could you please let us know what exact Samsung mobile phone it is and also the Android version? Android 4.1 – 4.4 Samsung phones use a weird old version of Google Chrome as the built-in browser and these are a bit strange (doesn’t support HLS properly, playback takes multiple taps to start on Android 4.1 and so on).

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Actually, I am facing this issue on Android 4.3 and it’s only when we check on Samsung Browser which is the default browser on phone.
On Chrome browser is working fine.

    Thanks Again

    Hello Neeti,

could you please check if you get the same issue at https://foliovision.com/player/demos/amazon-signed-urls ? I tried it with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with Android 4.3 and it works just fine.

Since there are issues with these older Samsung phones, we even show a message “You are using an old Android device. If you experience issues wih the video please use Firefox.” above the video.

    Thanks,
    Martin
