Setting focus to the video when using keyboard only

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Setting focus to the video when using keyboard only

  • Michael 1 month, 3 weeks ago

    Hi

I am developing a website designed to be highly accessible to people with disabilities, and I am having difficulty shifting focus to a video so it can be played using only the keyboard (no mouse).

As I tab down the page, the focus skips over the video to land on the AutoScroll control of the transcript section, and it isn’t possible to set the focus to the video itself so I can activate playing it.

If I am logged in as an Admin, the focus will go to the ‘Admin Ok’ text on the video, but even then, I cannot work out how to play it—again, emphasising that this is keyboard only, no mouse involved.

    Can anyone help?

For admin – website is at https://mediaforeveryone.com

    Thanks
    Michael

Sorry that should read ‘Video OK’ not ‘Admin Ok’.

    Hello Michael,

Thank you for your feature request.

We are checking if we could enable the tab key for the main player element only and let the users use space bar and arrow keys to control the player or if we let it go through each player control element.

The first approach is better if you have multiple players on one page as it’s faster to skip through each one of them. On the other hand perhaps the tab key could only work for the individual controls once the video is playling.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thank you for your response.

I think the first approach is better, as the visitor can use the keyboard shortcuts to control the video once focus is achieved,

Also, it would be better if they just want to tab down the page and skip over the videos to get read text after it rather than having to tab through each video player control element (which would be tedious).

Certainly, in my case, I have multiple videos, either single videos or in a playlist on a page, so again, the first approach would be better – achieving focus on each video’s main element.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Hello Michael,

You can try with the new FV Player 8 version with the accessibility improvements. Just reinstall FV Player from this link: https://foliovision.com/downloads/fv-player-8-accessibility.zip

Please let us know how the new version works for you and your users.

You can also test the accessibility features on the video here: https://foliovision.com

What we did not handle yet are the playlists.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thank you, Martin. The changes are excellent and will make a big difference for keyboard-only users.

A couple of points I noticed:

    • When tabbing past the Autoscroll control in the transcript window, Autoscroll checkbox is turned to the off state without user intervention. The checkbox should only be turned on or off by the user, not just by tabbing past it. However the text continues to scroll with the checkbox off.

    • The closed caption language selection control, quality control and speed controls are skipped when tabbing through and do not appear to be accessible by keyboard only. Is there another way to access these controls by keyboard?

Sincere thanks for all you do.

    Kind Regards
    Michael
