Check if live stream is on

    Hi all,
actually I don’t know if it’s a common requirement, but I try to explain.
I have a Wowza Cloud subscription (note about CLOUD because I can’t do anything on platform) and I use FVPlayer plugin on my wordpress website to play Live stream events. It’s working well but….
When I viewer clicks on play BEFORE the live stream starts, he get a “hlsjs.lite: Network error” and no way to click again on play. The viewer has to refresh the entire page in order to have the play button available again.
    That’s not a great solution.
Is there a way to show a friendly message of unavailable stream (or nice to have a splash image) and automatically load the stream as soon as it’s coming to player?

    Here a sample page https://www.joinpeople.it/testxxx/

    Many thanks
    Alessandro

    Hello Alessandro,

Showing custom message instead of error log in cases with inactive livestreams sounds interesting to me.

I’ll forward this thread to our development team to discuss our possibilities.

    Thanks,
    Juraj

    Hello Alessandro,

I have put up some detection of a live stream downtime for the new FV Player version. But before we release it, could you please test it on your end?

To test it out please reinstall FV Player from this ZIP file: https://github.com/foliovision/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/archive/331-live-stream-detection.zip You will have to first deactivate and delete the FV Player plugin you are currently using. No data nor settings will be lost. You can replace it with FTP too.

With this new version you will get a message like

    >We are sorry, currently no live stream available.

    Retrying in 30 seconds …

    And then it tries again.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
I tested your new player version and it seems work well. Many thanks for your great work.
I’ve just checked the new feature in a test page but I’ll use it for a real live stream next week.
    Just a couple of questions:
    1) new settings about timing and overlay text will be customizable?
    2) do you think this new feature could be implemented to check when live stream ends?

About second question, at the moment when live stream ends, video on player freezes and if you click on pause and play again, you can see about last 10 sec and then it freezes again.

It could be very interesting has a complete management for live streams flow.

    Waiting for your comments.
    Thank you.

    Hello Alessandro,

    1) I think we can just set some good time value for the retries. Does 30 seconds seem like too much?

1,5) The overlay text will likely be hardcoded too, but it should be translated (so you would be able to change it using the language hooks).

    2) Checking the stream ending is more tricky. Are you able to check if the m3u8 file stops changing once the stream end or how does it work?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
thanks a lot for your answer.
    1) I thought that reply every 30 sec. and custom text could be a couple of values easily to add to settings page, that’s why I asked you if it was planned to be customizable
    2) I’ll try to check and I’ll come back to you with more info if they there will be

Just once information. Both of changes you posted me in beta realease, I’ll find them in official plugin update for wordpress? Can I update your plugin to 7.4.21.727 or I have to wait for a specific version without loosing these features?

    Thank you
    Alessandro

    Hello Alessandro,

To install the beta version that Martin has send you, you need to deactivate and delete both FV Player and FV Player Pro. WordPress will warn you that you might loose some data but that’s not the case with FV Player.

    Thanks,
    Juraj

    Hello Alessandro,

since it works for you we can make it part of the next FV Player release.

The latest dev version can be found here: https://github.com/foliovision/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/archive/master.zip That will get rid of the 7.4.21.727 update warning for you as well.

    Thanks,
    Martin
