1) iPad fullscreen – Vimeo & JW player engages proper Apple full screen on my configuration. However, maybe you mean Youtube (inside safari), this does the same as FV player and doesnt engage Apple’s full screen. Although Youtube app works better.

2) Good if you can fix the WP bar but not a big issue. Moving the full screen button down to the navigation bar would be a personal wish list request. Maybe you have reasons to have top right and keep as is, a skinning option if feasible in the future would please all, or skin options that are similar to Vimeo or Youtube :-)

The FV navigation bar and full screen button is quite delicate and small on iPad. A slight increase in size/height if possible would improve, however if you manage to engage proper Apple full screen as per 1) above, Apple’s navigation controls are bigger and would part solve the issues, when in full screen anyway. A lot of my clients (brides) tend to use iPads at home.

3) I was wondering if FV plugin settings could have a setting added to let the website owner default to play HD first instead of SD, both for desktop and iPad viewing. (JW let you do this but only with their Flash player, I am moving away from Flash to HTML 5 which seems to play smoother nowadays). Your demo page, was what I tested, the SD button is highlighted when loaded. If I was to buy a commercial FV licence, my intention would be to self host and specify SD and HD files, and ideally serve HD by default. Only serving SD if the viewer manually selects or if auto-switching was possible if a slow connection – I dont know if this is feasible with self hosted 2 x mp4 files. Or I could consider only serving 1 file – the HD file, if buffer time till first play is not too long on average connection speeds.

On iPad: Vimeo and JW dont show the usual HD button like they do on desktop browsers. JW 5 is serving the SD file. Vimeo quality looks like SD, but my Vimeo account is currently basic and doesnt allow HD embedding. If Vimeo Plus and Pro uses HLS stream and automatic quality streaming, that is great.

The main issue preventing me proceeding fully at the moment with FV and purchasing a commercial licence is the playback issue reported here:

Vimeo seems to perform overall the best and fast buffer/start play time, low annual cost and if HLS streaming is automatic, maybe I should go back to Vimeo Plus which I used years ago, before the copyright music scares started. Licensed music is all sorted now, but I would still like a good HTML 5 self hosted solution if you are confident the main issues can be fixed? No worries if some are not feasible or likely any time soon, but would appreciate your honest heads up if possible.

Hi Martin

I have been evaluating again and am coming across playback problems on iPad again, persistent 3 dots flashing and the video never starts playing. Same result with demo videos on your site as with my site. Other non FV players are working fine. The problem resolved only by powering down and hard resetting iPad. On reboot, playback started very quick.

Many thanks for all the detailed info. I can confirm all you advise is correct and has fixed on my system:

1) “Prefer Flash player by default” YES THIS FIXES AND IS MY PREFERRED SOLUTION
2) Disable the GPU acceleration of video in Chrome – YES THIS FIXES

I also found an Nvidia graphics card setting that resolves the problem with HTML5 video. The video colour settings require changing to the following shown in the screenshot, manually selecting “Nvidia” settings specifically a Full Dynamic range 0-255, instead of using the “video player settings”

Its a shame the default Nvidia Control Panel settings have to be changed for HTML5 video colour space to be correct. Maybe something else on my system is affecting this if all your PC systems are fine on default browser and graphics card settings. BTW I have the latest Nvidia driver 344.75 which I updated last week when troubleshooting.

Yes I have the latest Quicktime version installed. Slightly erratic behaviour: After forcing the FV default settings to use flash, Safari on PC reported couldn’t find the flash video file, after a page refresh it played fine. Still getting black instead of video, when flash is not forced in the FV settings. Anyway am not too bothered about Safari on PC, very few people would use.

Very pleased to have made good progress!

On a separate note: I looked at your “quality switching” demo on your site on my ipad and iphone to see if switching works on iOS. You may already be aware of this, and probably iOS limitations, anyway here is some feedback FYI on the latest iOS:-

iPad iOS 8.1.1 – The 3 SD, HD & Mobile buttons appear, SD by default is highlighted and the video plays fine. However, pressing HD and Mobile has no effect, the SD video keeps playing.

iPhone iOS 8.1 – The 3 SD, HD & Mobile buttons appear, Mobile by default is highlighted if viewing the mobile version of your site. SD is highlighted if viewing the desktop version of your site. 3 dots flash indefinitely without the video starting regardless. Pressing one of the other 3 button works and starts to buffer video, waited till the buffer bar the end but video still doesnt start playing. Stays in pause mode.

Full screen implementation on iOS is different to other players. Usually Apple’s own video controls get activated when in full screen mode and there is a DONE button at the top to go back to the page. Also in recent iOS you can pinch zoom to go in and out of full screen. FV player on iPad doesnt react like this and doesnt fully take over the entire screen, the safari toolbar remains at the top. Maybe deliberate implementation for your share bar to be accessible. Its not that big a deal but thought I’d mention, wondering if this is something that could be looked into for a later update if it is feasible?

Full screen on iPhone activates the Apple video controls and proper full screen automatically which is good, thats what you want. So its just iPad thats not handled the usual Apple way.

Update: Rebooted iPad and Safari, all working now!

Will have a look at the “All In One WP Security” plugin try contact their developer for assistance. Any thoughts you may have on what I may be looking for would be most helpful.

After re-installing the plugin, I checked the CSS folder via FTP and the 3 files are present.

Maybe CSS conflict, my wordpress site uses a customer wordpress theme “Prophoto” I also have some custom CSS and custom Javascript. I temporarily removed my custom CSS and Javascript which had no effect. May or may not be a clash with the Prophoto theme?
