Sound plays via wrong audio device in Firefox on Windows

[Solved]

  • Matthew B. 11 years, 5 months ago

Here’s a strange one for you. When playing a FV Flowplayer video in Firefox on Windows 8, the sound comes out of the wrong audio device, i.e not the default one!

Sounds bizarre I know, but watch this video, that explains it better.

Very strange bug huh? Any ideas?

    Hello Matthew,

thank you for the interesting report.

Did you tried to removed the “Default communication device” flag from your other sound device and see if that help? Perhaps Flowplayer goes through the “Default communication device” instead of “Default Device”.

    Thanks
    Martin

I did, that didn’t cure it. Sometimes a reboot cures it but other times not. Very strange, I would have for sure said it was a Firefox problem but media on other pages plays fine as you can see.

    Hello Matthew,

    1. could you also check other browsers in Windows 8, like Internet Explorer and Chrome? That would be helpful. It might be a Firefox bug.

    2. Does it also happen on Youtube or Vimeo? These might actually use Flash for the playback, so you might not notice the issue.

    3. You can try to add engine=”flash” to the shortcode and see if that helps with your issue.

If all 3 of these turn out positive, then it would be a bug in Firefox Windows 8 HTML5 engine.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hi Martin, I did check Chrome and IE11 and there was no problem with those browsers. However, in Firefox I only checked Youtube and not other video sites. Next time the problem occurs I will try the engine=”flash” shortcode and report back. I haven’t noticed the problem today, maybe it was cured in the latest Firefox update.

    Hello Matthew,

if you suspect that latest Firefox update fixed the bug, it would be great if you could test that and report back. You can see the releases here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/releases/

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hi Martin, no sign of the bug recently! Fingers crossed Mozilla solved it.

Hello. I apologise for reviving an 8 month old post, but I’d like to share what I treat as *always* the solution when this happens to me.

Whenever Firefox either stays mute or plays through the wrong device, the main device reads as being used by another program if you try to test it in the sound control panel. To fix this, restart the Windows Audio Service. (In Windows 8, open task manager, go to the services tab, and search for Audiosrv. Right click, and restart it).

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Thomas,

thank you for your input on this!

Could you please let us know what Firefox version you are using?

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hello, I am using version 32.0.3. Sometimes Firefox will need a restart also when using my fix.

Please note, though, that this fixes issues with YouTube and other sides like VideoWeed, and similar, but not what has been mentioned here. However I assume that the fix should work here too.

    Thanks for the solution Thomas!
I had the same problem with Chrome and restarting Audiosrv solved it.
