Mobile Video Playback Issues – Video cuts to grey, audio only.

    Hey Foliovision Team,

Hoping you guys might be able to shed some light on some mobile playback issues that we have been experiencing while embedding a specific video.

    The video in questions is
    https://www.optimize.me/greatest-year-ever/

Currently the video seems to play fine/as intended on desktop browsers but when viewing from mobile devices the video picture will cut out to a dark grey screen, but the audio will continue going for the remainder of time.

We host all videos with Vimeo and use FV player for our player site wide, this seems to be the only video we have ran into this problem with. The video encoding matches all other working videos.

Originally thought it maybe a vimeo issue so reached out to support their and they confirmed video is working via vimeo and maybe 3rd party player.

    Hello Brian,

I checked your video and although it was playing on some newer iOS devices, I only had audio and no video during the playback on Android and some older iPhones. Is that the same issue you are seeing?

Also, are you using the Enable MPEG-DASH (Beta) function in Settings > FV Player Pro > Hosting tab > Vimeo (Pro)?

    Thanks,
    Eduard

    Hey Eduard,

Thank you for the quick response.

Yes that is what I am experiencing on mobile, the video starts gets about 8 seconds in then the video freezes and the audio continues, at that point if I try to fast forward the video cuts to a dark grey and the audio will continue.

I personally have tested on physical IPhone X device, and then used browser stack and can confirm same issues on some android and older iphone devices as well.

We were not using the Enable MPEG-DASH(beta) function, but after note I have went into settings and checked it on so we now are, unfortunately this did not seem to change anything.

The odd situation is this seems to be the only video we are having any trouble with on mobile (have deleted and re-encoded/reuploaded to vimeo multiple times for sanity).

Here is an example of same type of video working on a different page using same implementation( same wp template)

Thanks again for the help Eduard really appreciate it.

    Hello Brian,

I tested https://www.optimize.me/greatest-year-ever/ with iOS 11.2 and it plays well for me. I’m getting the HLS stream from Vimeo’s Akamai CDN.

MPEG-DASH is actually not supported by iOS, however if you would like to use it for desktop computers, please make sure you updated FV Player Pro to latest version as what you have up now is a version (0.9.11) with a critical bug in MPEG-DASH – if it’s not available for some Vimeo video it won’t play.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

Thanks for following up. I took your advice and updated FV Player Pro to the latest version, after the update no videos were working in chrome I then disabled the MPEG-DASH Beta feature and videos began working in chrome again.

As for mobile playback I am still getting the original problem of the video pausing / cutting to grey but the audio continuing to play.

I am running the newest iPhone X (10) with the latest iOS 11.2.2 and getting playback error in mobile chrome and safari. I tried debugging the video with your admin video debug tool but getting nothing there as well.

Any tips on debugging videos that you guys use ?

    Hey Martin,
Just wanted to follow up that it seems I am getting the same grey screen now on desktop in Latest safari which might make it easier to debug here is a quick screen recording just so you know exactly what I am seeing.

    Hello Brian,

we were able to replicate the issue on Android 7.1, it’s weird. What helped was loading HLS for that device. Vimeo HLS streams were not safe to play on Android 4.4, but perhaps they work fine on Android 6 and above, we need to check.

Thank you for the video. Could you please play the FV Player video in your Safari and then right click it and choose Inspect Element? You should be able to find a video element easily and see what it’s playing – please see the attached – it’s taken from my Safari 11.0.2 where it plays just fine.

As you can see it plays an m3u8 video – HLS stream. Then you can copy that URL and open it in browser directly – will it play?

You should be also able to test with the HLS and MP4 videos taken from Vimeo directly – just open your video like this: https://vimeo.com/249186045/settings/file – you should be able to see “Access your video files” section which several input boxes. Could you please check if these play properly?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,
Thanks again for the help, I followed your steps re Safari and the Safari 11.0.2 on my machine does not play the video all the way through still getting freezing video with audio continuing.

I did inspect the video element src and can confirm I am receiving the same src as you attached in your screenshot, when I copy that src url and try to play directly in browser I am getting the same kind of error, the video will freeze and the audio continue.

Here is a quick screen recording to see – https://cl.ly/2X1Q0B0e2h2E

When I check the console there is a “Failed to load resource: Plug-in handled load” error however I don’t have any extensions and as an extra precaution disabled all extensions in settings. – https://cl.ly/2T0D3j3I0p1c

When accessing the vimeo video links in vimeo back-end directly in safari the video plays fine: links played – https://cl.ly/3x3O0h1N2E0s

    Hello Brian,

we let Safari 11 play the MPEG-DASH stream, that should fix the issue.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Brian,

new release of FV Player Pro in its Beta brach(here is how to switch to it) plays the Vimeo HLS streams on Androind 4.3 and above. We figured out it was the HLS subtitles which were causing the issues on it.

It should be released later today. It should fix your Android issues with certain Vimeo videos you were having. I was no longer able to replicate the issues you were having.

    Thanks,
    Martin
