fv player + dropbox + safari doesn’t work anymore

    hi,

    we used for month without problems this setup:

    wordpress + fv player
    the embedded videos are in a dropbox account

    since a few days we have now the problem, that safari can’t play the videos, we get the following error message:

    html5: video file not found

    but with firefox and google chrome the videos still plays without problems

    are there any known problems with safari at the moment?

    Hi Ferdinand,

    Thank you for reaching out to us!

    I couldn’t play the demo video on Chrome either. Could you please send us a report via our built-in video checker? The way the video checker works is that you need to come in as admin and open the video checker and send us a report about the video. It works on desktops.

    Using that we might be able to figure out what is the issue with video encoding.

    Also, while it is possible to store your videos on cloud hosting providers such as Google Drive, One Drive, A Drive and Dropbox, there is a list of reasons why we don’t recommend it for playback on a website: https://foliovision.com/2019/07/bad-hosting-for-videos.

    hi chiara,

    I activated the built-in video checker, interestingly it doesn’t find problems:

    Admin: Video OK
    Analysis of https://www.dropbox.com/s/lff97lbcmwe0v2n/AppleStore_entsteht.mp4?raw=1
    Mime Type: video/mp4

    it’s strange that the video doesn’t work for you, for me it works with:

    macOS 11.2.2 and Google Chrome 88 and Firefox 86
    windows 10 and Google Chrome 88

    it doesn’t work for me with
    macOS 11.2.2 and Safari 14.0.3 (and other macos-versions and safari)
    iOS smartphone with all browsers (because on iOS all browsers use safari as rendering-engine, even google chrome)

    Hello Ferdinand,

    I tried to open that mp4 file link directly in the iPhone Safari browser and it plays there.

    However it doesn’t play when embedded to a webpage and it doesn’t matter if you use FV Player or a bare HTML5 video tag like here: http://foliovision.com/html/dropbox.html

    So I’m guessing Dropbox has stopped direct file access if it detects the request is coming from a website and the file is not being opened directly.
