Download video in several resolutions

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › Download video in several resolutions

    Hello Foliovision Team,
Will you every consider to add a download button on the player having the option to download the video playing in every resolution that is available? As far as I know at the moment a video can only be downloaded in one resolution.
Is it also possible to show the palylist in the player and not underneath?
    Thanks!
    Nick

    Hello Nikolaos,

    thank you for your suggestions!

I will ask our development team about adding multiple quality downloads.

As for the playlist in the player, there are various ways this could be implemented. Could you please elaborate a bit more on how do you envision it?

We are currently considering adding an in-player grid playlist style (think in-player recommended videos on YouTube, but showing playlist items). What do you think about this option?

That being said, there are some playlist options that could perhaps fit your needs: https://foliovision.com/player/demos/playlist-styles You can always get rid of particular elements you do not like via CSS.

Let us know, what you think.

    Hello Maria,
Thank you for your reply. I was actually looking how to set up the different playerlist-styles, after reading your article about it now I know now how to do it.
I also have another question. Is it possilbe that the FV player automatically chooses itself the best resolution according to the internet speed connection and device? For example if someone watches a video on a mobile device that the FV switches automatically to a lower resolution, whithout having to do it manually. In the resolutions tab on the player how do I set up the “auto” option?
    Thanks
    Nick

    Hello Nick,

that automated quality switching is called ABR (Adaptive Bitrate Streaming) and is available for HLS and MPEG-DASH streams. If you are using the mp4-based quality switching in FV Player Pro, then it won’t work.

Please let us know what quality prefixes are you using, the mobile one should be detected automatically and served for mobile users.

The video downloading should work with the quality which you enter as the Video link in the FV Player editor. Wouldn’t it be enough if it would always download the highest quality?

    Thanks
    Martin

    Hello Martin,
    Thanks for your reply.
Not everyone wants to download the highest quality. Some would like to download a lower quality or serveral qualities at the same time, as everyone has different storage and display requirements. So the option to be able to download a video in several qualities would be a unique and great feature for the FV player.
    Thanks

    Hi Nick,

This request got lost, I’m sorry. On reflection, I don’t think multiple qualities of download is particularly useful on the player interface. It would add a lot of clutter and mines for most video publishers to step on by making the posting interface more complex and confusing.

On the other hand, it should be possible to set up below the player as a series of links. If downloading is available, that means having clean mp4 files available, aside from the usual HLS versions.

I’m still wondering about how to implement the multiple download versions on the admin side to prevent the lists of five different qualities of mp4 videos which people had to fight before HLS streams to post a single video. What makes it worse is that you would probably lpreferike to make multiple flavours of download video specific and not site wide, hence the interface would have to be there for every video.

Martin, we might be able to do something by putting the downloads in a different tab and with a folding arrow for the alternative formats.

    Thanks for the request Nick,

    Alec
