Why Do Posts marked as "Solved" Allow for Replies when they're Not Save???

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Bug Reports › Why Do Posts marked as "Solved" Allow for Replies when they're Not Save???

  • dplum 7 years, 3 months ago

Two times within the last 2 days I posted a Reply to a post titled “Amazon S3 – html5: network error” — And in making those two replies I was never given a message saying that my reply would not be saved and therefore not seen by a moderator.

The first time I went back to my open browser tab to see if there was a response to my reply and saw that my reply was there, but no follow-up response, I refreshed the page thinking that might reveal one — but after the refresh I could see that my reply was in fact not there — it had not been saved at all.

This left me feeling puzzled and confused, but I did what I thought I should and I replied again — and again there was no message given saying that the post would take no further replies. And so I entered my second reply attempt.

Today I returned to the open browser tab looking to see if there might be a response AND AGAIN WHEN THERE WAS NO RESPONSE I REFRESHED THE PAGE, AND AGAIN THE REPLY I HAD POSTED WAS ONCE AGAIN NOT AT ALL ON THAT PAGE.

I’M SORRY IF MY ALL CAPS STATEMENT HEAR MAY COME ACROSS AS MY BEING UPSET — well I’m not — I’m just very surprised that FolioVision would allow for this to situation to exist.

COULD YOU PLEASE DISABLE THE REPLY DIALOG ON PAGES THAT YOU FLAG AS “SOLVED”, especially when their “Solved” status may not in fact reflect a solution at all.

    I will now create a new post called “Amazon S3 – html5: network error – Part 2”

I have some further input to this “Bug” issue on Forum Posts… It appears to be due to the fact that if a Reply is posted while you are Not Logged In then even though the replay is Saved and is “Awaiting Moderation”, if you Refresh the page while Not Logged in, you’ll not see that last Reply.

And so each time that I thought I’d lost a reply I had previously posted, in fact they were actually there, but I couldn’t see them because I wasn’t logged in.

I’m not sure what the answer to all of this is, but it would seem to me that you’d be best to FORCE a Login to the Forum to anyone who wants to view or post to it, AND if a user’s session times out then they need to re-login in order to continue this would eliminate the confusion and wasted time like what I’ve experienced.

In the absense of your making this change here’s what I’d recommend every one look for BEFORE THEY POST a Reply — see https://www.screencast.com/t/T96eDllehtxv

    Hello Dennis,

Thank you for your bug report. Our forums work like this:

    1. If you post to our forum as a guest, you will get a cookie for your forum topic/reply. The topic/reply is awaiting moderation.

1.1 New email address is automatically registered and a user account is created. The user will receive an email with access credentials.

1.2 If the user with email exists, the topic/reply is assigned to that user.

    2. When somebody tries to access a topic which is only awaiting the moderation, he gets 404 page with a login form.

2.1 Unless they have the cookie, so if they switch browsers or clear cookies, they lose access to the topic and have to log in.

We tested the cookie behaviour and found out that the expiration time was set to just a couple of minutes. This was caused by an update of our caching plugin, which we didn’t expect, as it was not mentioned in their changelog (we are contacting their support about this right now).

In the meanwhile we have fixed the cookie expiration time, so you should not see this issue again.

    Thanks,
    Eduard

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for taking the time to point the login issue out and debug it in depth. It’s not an easy solution as we don’t want to force people to log in to view.

We could force log in to post but if you are going back to a post on a different device that won’t work. As Edo pointed out, there was a change in our caching plugin which made this issue far more acute (even disposing of the cookie on the existing device).

We’ll keep a close eye on this issue.

    Cordial regards,

    Alec

One more issue that I’m experiencing is that I do not receive an email notifying me of replies made to a post that I make.

I’ve enabled the checkbox requesting this but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

    Hello Dennis,

according to our SMTP logs the last email you had received was on Friday and it was about my reply on the “Amazon S3 – html5: network error” thread: https://foliovision.com/support/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/troubleshooting/html5-network-error

I also see you received 2 emails for this forum topic.

Could you please check your spam or junk folder? Some emails might end up these even though they pass SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks.

You email address is d*@s*.c* Are you forwarding the emails to some other email account?

    Thanks,
    Martin

You’re right, I’m responding to this thread as a result of receiving an email with your response.

I think where I didn’t receive emails was due to the replies that I ate while not logged in.

    Hi Dennis,

We have done some testing of email responses that come from our forums just to make sure everything is running as it’s supposed to and found no issues. Thanks again for reporting the issues, though, it helped us to fix the caching plugin problem.

    Thanks,
    Eduard
