Ok, resetting the settings did not work.

Also, deactivating the plugin did not work.

Uninstalling and reinstalling did not work.

However, I dropped the wp_gravatars table and then reinstalled the plugin. <—- this worked.

It now is SSL compliant. Thanks for your help.
