Removing the ‘Mobile browser detected’ text

[Solved]

    Hi there,

I’ve been playing around with your plugin for a few days now and I am suitably impressed! I had a few hiccups trying to get the videos working on mobile but realised it was an encoding issue – the solution I’ve come to is to upload two versions of the same video: a super HD version which will play well on desktops but will not run on mobile and the specifically encoded mobile version.

The only issue I now encounter is, when playing on a mobile browser, though the mobile version is automatically selected, the option to return to the ‘full quality’ version is still present (even though the full quality version will not work on mobile).

IF POSSIBLE I would like to remove this text outright – it will be far better, in my opinion, for the viewer not to know they are watching a lower-resolution version on mobile as, given the option, they will always try to switch to higher quality – here, the video will break and we run the risk of the viewer immediately giving up trying to watch — this is not something we wish to entail.

If you have any ideas/know how to solve this, any help would be greatly appreciated. We are looking to purchase a licence of FV Flowplayer if these few inconveniences can be ironed out!

    Cheers in advance!
    Alex Macpherson.

    Hello Alex,

thank you for your interest in our plugin!

You can disable the switching by adding a line of CSS into your mobile theme (or your main theme if it’s responsive):

    p.fv-flowplayer-mobile-switch { display: none }

Mobile support is very important. Quality Switching works better in our FV Player Pro extension which is available for licensed users (although we need to improve our mobile user detection in there). FV Player Pro also allows you to play videos of Vimeo and YouTube and these detect mobile users automatically (here I must say that YouTube plays on older mobile much better than Vimeo).

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply – thankfully I managed to solve the issue in a slightly better way (at least to my needs) – using an FTP client, I was able to locate the plugin files on the web-host and edit the actual message on line 84 of ‘FV-Flowplayer.min.js’ to say “Viewing on mobile? Be sure to check back on PC for full-and-glorious HD!”

Thanks for the swift reply, though, I’m sure both of our methods will prove of use to others seeking similar resolve to myself!

    Cheers!

    Hello Alex,

your solution works, but it will break with the first plugin upgrade.

We can put in a WP filter hook for this phrase, so then you could be changing it using an addon plugin. That would be a much more elegant solution.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks for your input Alex.

    Hi Martin,

Let’s disable the HD version on mobile if it doesn’t work (admin users can get an overlay tip about upgrading to FV Player Pro if there’s an advantage).

    No worries, Alec!

Not too sure if it outright doesn’t work, but the files we’re uploading to be played didn’t – namely due to them not being specifically encoded to work with mobile browsers (which significantly lowers quality). Your plugin was ideal in that it offered the ability to detect a mobile browser and stream a separate, lower quality video which did work without the need for a dual-post (kudos, only plugin I could find with this feature!).

Either way, great work, we’ll definitely be looking into the pro-version in the coming weeks!

    Thanks again!
    Alex

Thanks for the additional detail Alex.

Martin, it seems to me we should be able to identify problem files most of the time and avoid offering mobile quality switching (even in the free version).
