We are in general very happy with the player.
Our only problem that we need to solve before committing to this solution, is the spacing in the transcripts. A lot of empty lines are added by the player.
See here with Foliovision: https://www.ctrtranscript.com/tibetan-book-of-the-dead-talk-one/
empty lines are added in the middle of sentences. Here the same video and VTT file with the able player: https://ctrstaging.wpengine.com/html/demo-able-local-video.html
Is there a way to avoid the empty lines?
Thank you,
Francoise

Hi Francoise,
We’re pleased by your happiness with our player.
Those empty lines could be caused by your subtitles formatting in that .vtt file. The best for us would be if we could see how your .vtt file is formatted. Do you split sentences into several lines in your .vtt file?
Thanks for using our plugin,
Juraj
Hi,
Here the vtt file: https://www.ctrtranscript.com/wp-content/vtt/CTP-Demo3_TBD_Talk1_sm.vttYes we split sentences because we want the highlighted text to follow the text. SO sometimes the player put the lines together and sometimes not – I am wondering why and if it is a parameter we can change.
Thank you for your help,
FrancoiseHi Françoise,
Thanks for your input on interactive transcripts. The original parsing was put in by the programming team without interaction from the creative team. It resulted in usable but unattractive transcripts. As a writer, once I’d checked in to what we were doing it was clear that we could do better.
Instead of breaking VTT into individual lines now, what we are doing are applying two tests.
If the VTT file inserts empty data for pauses (in most cases, this is what is generated by tools like the YouTube VTT builder), we will now add a paragraph break here.
If the VTT file leaves time breaks instead (what I might do by hand, some people do it this way), each time break greater than two seconds will generate a new paragraph.
To create an extra paragraph, as a content creator you only need to add the time code line with no text (as short as you like). I.e.
00:00:49.210 --> 00:00:54.300 align:middle line:90%
That way almost all files will be parsed correctly automatically and if you would like to do additional formatting, the control is in your hands and not in that of an automated parser making arbitrary decisions based on when the last paragraph appeared.
Again, thank you very much for helping us improve FV Player Pro. Your input has been invaluable.
Alec
Hello Francoise,
the new interactive transcript formatting is in FV Player Pro 7.4.6.727 in its Beta branch. To switch to Beta please follow instructions here: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/switching-fv-player-pro-to-beta
Thanks,
MartinHello,
could you process this option “align:middle line:90%” with fv by default when it meets just an empty subtitle?
I do have empty subtitle line in my vtt file like this
32
00:01:50.710 –> 00:01:50.80933
00:01:50.834 –> 00:01:53.522
test textIt’s just ignored by fv player.
The issue is that the original subtitle files initially come in srt format, that has no formatting options.
Thanks
Hello Martin,
sorry, blank lines work fine. I was probably misled by this caching effect. How often does the fv player refresh the subtitle file?
When you have a large video transcript that is about an hour long, you format the transcript step by step, placing blank lines in the subtitle file for paragraphing.
It would be helpful to be able to temporarily disable this caching to see the immediate effect of how new paragraphs are displayed in the transcript.
Thanks,
Edward
