FV Player defaulting to Mobile format when setting the Flash preference

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › FV Player defaulting to Mobile format when setting the Flash preference

  • michaelbaxter 6 years, 11 months ago

Using FV Player Pro v6.6.2, I have uploaded both a high quality MP4, and a lower quality (mobile version) MP4 with the extensions .mob.mp4.

    Tested with Chrome 67.0.3396.79 (64-bit) on Mac, and Chrome 67.0.3396.79 (64-bit) on Win7 Pro, then IE11 .0.9600.19002CO 64-bit on Win7 Pro.

In every case, the video appears to be playing the lower quality .MOB.MP4. Fullscreen looks terrible.

The video can be viewed and tested here.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance!

Upon further testing, it appears that the player defaults to the Mobile version whenever “Prefer Flash player by default” is checked.

    Hi Michael!

I tested example on my site also in Chrome on mac as your example now serve one good video quality (which is understandable as you want good user experience).

The quality switching for me worked. The first quality that is picked will be the default one served. Maybe there was some problem with naming scheme?

    namefile-HD.mp4
    namefile-MOB.mp4

And in the settings of the player the labels should be as following:

    naming scheme:
    -HD
    -MOB

    label (you can pick):
    – HD
    – Mobile

As Martin mentioned, is there a particular reason for using Flash? We do not really recommend it as it is not safe and many device do not support it at all.

Let me know if we can help further,

    Lucia

I was not using naming schemas for quality switching. I uploaded one video (full-size) to the “Video” field, and a different video (smaller size / lower quality) to the “Mobile” field. The player is always showing the “Mobile” version, no matter the platform:

    [fvplayer src="http://mydoctor.kpnvly.org/cancer-care/wp-content/uploads/sites/##/201#/##/inherited_cancer_risk.mp4" mobile="http://mydoctor.kpnvly.org/cancer-care/wp-content/uploads/sites/##/201#/##/inherited_cancer_risk.mob_.mp4" splash="http://mydoctor.kpnvly.org/cancer-care/wp-content/uploads/sites/##/201#/##/inherited_cancer_risk.png" width="864" height="486" subtitles="http://mydoctor.kpnvly.org/cancer-care/wp-content/uploads/sites/##/201#/##/inherited_cancer_risk.vtt"]

I want the full-sized video to play on non-Mobile computers, and the “Mobile” version to ONLY play on Mobile devices.

I am not seeing Martin’s comment anywhere, but I do take exception to your statement “We do not really recommend it as it is not safe and many device do not support it at all”. That seems to run contrary to the way your settings are labeled. Specifically, the uploaded screen capture shows your settings indicate that using Flash “provides greater compatibility”. It does not say “not recommended” or “use with caution”. Perhaps there is some internal disagreement your team needs to resolve, but I find that contradiction frustrating.

    Hello Michael,

thank you for pointing out that contradiction – we actually need to remove that setting. It used to be useful 3-4 years ago when Firefox (but even Chrome) had several issues with HTML5 video – often depending on the video encoding. I prepared that change for next FV Player release.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thank you, Martin, for the clarification. I will be sure to uncheck that from now on.
