Setting Up Video Quality Switching

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Setting Up Video Quality Switching

  • Grant R. 7 years, 1 month ago

Hello, is there some way to have the player automatically play the highest suitable quality that can play smoothly according to the detected bandwidth?

As a fallback, it would be great if the video quality buttons appear before the video starts playing, to allow the user to switch it down to a lower quality in case the video takes forever to load at the default (higher) quality set.

    Hi Grant,

What kind of video format are you using? If you were using HLS with the HLS.js, this would happen automatically.

If you are using another format and you want to use the manual quality switching, then you can select which video quality will be considered as the default one by changing the order of the available qualities in FV Player’s settings. It’s explained in more detail in this guide – Setting Up Video Quality Switching (check step 3).

    Thanks,
    Eduard

Does this work if the video is hosted on s3?

    Martin 7 years ago

    Hello x1d,

the quality switching works with Amazon S3, however then it’s not switching the qualities automatically – unless you would host a HLS stream there.

I would only recommend Amazon S3 as a video hosting if majority of your visits comes from a single country where the Amazon S3 server (bucket) is located. For world-wide video distribution you should be using CloudFront with it.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi!

Does it automatically change the video quality according to the user’s internet speed?

If so, does this change occur before the video starts or at the same time youtube?

    Congratulations on the plugin.

    Hello Gabriel,

the custom quality switching setup with MP4 files doesn’t support that.

If you want to automate this we recommend using HLS streams: https://foliovision.com/player/video-hosting/hls

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Maurizio!

Can you please share the URL link where we can see the video? Where are your videos hosted?

    Thanks,

    Lucia
