New AB Loop Design

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › New AB Loop Design

    Hi Foliovision Team,

I hope you all are having a good weekend. I have two quick questions/requests whenever you have time…

I know you have been working on the new AB Loop design that’s easier to use. Do you know about when that might be launched?

In the current AB Loop design, when I move the “I” and “O” points, it seems like the loop will only work properly if the current position of the video is within the selected In and Out points. This causes some confusion for my less tech savvy guitar students. In the new AB Loop design that you’re working on, will it be possible for the loop to still work even if the video position is outside of the loop. For example, the video is playing..it is at 40 seconds and tracking…then I adjust the loop to In 45 seconds and Out 55 seconds…Can I let the video continue to play, and when it reaches 55 seconds, it will loop back to 45 seconds and so on? Hope that makes sense.

Thanks! Can’t wait to see what the new AB loop looks like.

    Devin

    Hello Devin,

the new AB loop design got really delayed as we have to improve the player color schemes a bit.

I’m not sure if I really understood the issue here – if I play the video at https://foliovision.com/player/demos/user-ab-loop and seek to 0:40 and then quickly set the loop points to 0:45 and 0:55 the playback will get into that loop. It only doesn’t loop if set the loop before the playback position – like 0:20 to 0:30. In that case you have to set the loop points and then seek into that loop by hand. Is that the issue your users are having?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Sounds good, can’t wait to see the new AB loop design when you get it finished up.

Actually, I think you’re right…setting the loop earlier, like in your example 0:20 to 0:30, might be the issue. Possibly my students are playing the video, letting it play…then they realize they want to loop a section they just watched and set the loop before the current play position. I think the extra AB loop bar below the actual play bar might be causing some confusion too..I think they might have trouble seeing the in and out times to the left and right of the AB loop bar. I think it does work fine once you get the hang of it.

Here’s an example of an AB loop on a video on a different guitar lesson site… https://www.sixstringcountry.com/lessons/youll-think-of-me.3558920 I really like how the “A” In marker automatically moves the video position instead of the loop starting once it finally hits the Out marker point.

Anyways, just some ideas. Thanks again! Hope you have a good week –

    Hello Devin,

we had a look with Alec and we agree that moving the loop start should also seek the video into that spot. On your demo website it seems to only seek if you set the loop start ahead of the current playback position, we would set that to happen at all times as if you set the loop you want to be sure you set it to the desired place.

For the same reason we will also make the seek operation happen anytime you set the loop end point as well. It should seek to about 2 seconds before that loop end marker is reached to really let you see your loop end point and let you finetune it.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thanks for your interest and the suggestion John. Your example is easy to use but doesn’t pass modern design standards. Our new AB loop isn’t much different but should basically work the same and look better.

You’re right – keyboard shortcuts are really the way to get precise cuts. That’s what video editors use for exact cuts: listen and then hit a key.

Ok sounds good! Look forward to trying it out.

Thanks Alec. I mostly sent the example above just to show the functionality from a UX design perspective. I definitely agree that their design could use a bit of work. I’m excited about the new folivision AB loop design. If it’s anything like your other work it is going to look great. Thanks for the reply. – Devin

    Hello Devin,

the new AB loop appearance is part of the FV Player Pro Beta release 7.3.16.727. Here is a demo of it: https://foliovision.com/player/demos/user-ab-loop There will also be a setting for the AB loop bar color.

Here’s how to get to the beta release: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/switching-fv-player-pro-to-beta

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the update. I really like the demo that you have on the Foliovision site. The overall functionality is much better. I tried switching over to beta on my site, cleared cache and purged my CDN… I’m using a custom skin on my video player. Will the new AB loop work with a custom skin as well? The AB loop feature seemed to look the same when I was using beta and a custom skin.

Here are a few of my thoughts based on my first time testing the new AB loop feature:

    – I really like how you move the play bar below the video so it doesn’t cover up the video when you’re using the AB loop tool. That is a huge plus!

    – I also really like how the “in and out” times popup just above the triangle selectors when you move them. That is really easy to understand and very helpful.

    – Would there be any way to make the triangle in and out selectors a bit larger… especially on mobile. It’s a bit hard to grab the triangles when I’m using my iPhone and it might look nice to have them larger for laptop/desktop as well.

    – Would it be possible to add an option to attach the in and out triangle selectors to the main progress bar as opposed to having a new “AB loop progress line” above the main progress bar as it is now in beta? I do like this new design better than the current version in release, but to me, it could be even simpler and more straight forward if the in and out triangles are attached directly to the main progress bar… and if you kept the time stamp above the selectors when you drag them, that would be perfect… and slightly larger triangles to make it easier to click and drag.

Overall I’m really happy with the new look and functionality. Those are just a few thoughts based on my first impression.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Devin,

Thanks for all the insights! We’re always thrilled to hear what our users actually think about our new or improved features since it provides us such valuable feedback.

Yes, we’re planning to add skin customization options for the ab loop bar in the close future. I’m sure it will contain color customization for the timeline.

Exactly as you said, with the new look we did not want to cover any parts of the actual video. We were also experiencing issues with the “Remove youtube logo” option with the old look and this new layout helped us to solve these problems. Thanks for the nice words on layout and time popup!

    Now for your recommendations:

Thanks for the info on triangle sizes. I’ll do in-depth testing on different phones with different screen sizes tomorrow, we might have missed the sizing for mobile phones with smaller screens. I’ll keep you posted about it.

The “slim ab loop skin” sounds nice to me as well, but I am not completely sure if it won’t cause any trouble with the existing main timeline of the video. Martin is currently on vacation but I’ll write down all these notes and we’ll discuss all of them when he cames back.

Thanks for being part of the Foliovision Devin,

    Juraj
