Auto Quality Button + Enable Quality Switching

[Solved]

    Hi Foliovision Team,

Hope you’re all having a great holiday season. I know you’re super busy getting the new framework launched so no rush on replying or anything, but just wanted to write in a quick request for the player. I don’t think I’ve sent this to you yet…

For Vimeo hosting, would it be possible to have the option to check “Enable quality switching”…then for the player to show the quality switching buttons, and also show another button called “Auto” for the HLS auto streaming? Maybe it could default to Auto if the person’s device can handle it…I’d say in just about every occasion, my students can play the videos just fine with HLS, but every now an then I get an e-mail saying the videos are stopping and starting very often. I think they must have an old computer or device possibly? It could be nice for them to be able to manually reduce the quality to 360p or whatever they need as well as having Auto for the folks with up to date devices and browsers. I believe Vimeo has that option on their player under the “gear box” settings button.

Thanks again for all the great work on everything. Still extremely happy with the player, and I’m really looking forward to the Chromecast option and all the other features in the new framework.

    Have a great week –
    Devin

    Hi Devin,

Thank you and we all wish a great holiday season to you, too! This is an interesting idea and we’ll definitely discuss it. Vimeo’s Auto quality is a good example of this, so we’ll check if it’s possible to add this option to our player as well.

    Thanks,
    Eduard

    Hi Devin,

Thanks for the in-the-field feedback. What should be happening now is “Auto” by default. If you choose a different resolution, you then get that resolution. My goal is to keep the interface as simple as possible so it seems better to me to give everyone auto but if you choose to start controlling your streams manually that’s what you get until you change your mind.

Resolution is device dependent and not account dependent so just because someone picked 480p on his or her telephone doesn’t mean s/he is stuck with it on his or her desktop.

Per se I don’t want to add an auto button but my mind is still open if there are a lot of requests.

    Happy New Year!

    Hello Devin,

to conclude this one – with the MPEG-DASH streaming which FV Player Pro provides out of the box for Vimeo it does work with the Auto quality option by default.

    Thanks,
    Martin
