Simple example of .m3u playlist + local/remote MP3

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Simple example of .m3u playlist + local/remote MP3

  • Mark S Cathcart 4 years, 1 month ago

I’m really think that FV Player will do this, but I just can’t work it out, which is on me as this has to be obvious.

I have a number of .m3u audio playlists. VLC (Video LAN) desktop player plays them great, they include local and remote .mp3 files. The remote playlist files that include media via https with doman/path/media.mp3 format urls.

Can I just import the .m3u files, upload the local files to my wordpress host, and then create a post to play the .m3u playlist on a webpage?

    Hi Mark,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

The file formats supported by FV Player are FLAC (not supported by Internet Explorer) and MP3. OGG is supported as well, but it is not supported by Safari browsers and Internet Explorer, which is probably why uploading of the .m3u playlist doesn’t work. You can read the full guide on How to Use Audio Tracks in FV Player here: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/audio-tracks-player.

Are you able to upload the separate .mp3 files through FV Player shortcode editor? That way you can merge them into one playlist. Here’s the full guide on how to create Playlists with FV Player: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/creating-playlists and a Demo on how an audio playlist looks like on a page: https://foliovision.com/player/demos/mp3-in-fv-player#playlist.

Let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.

    Thanks,
    Chiara

    Chiara, thanks for the response.

My use case is existing .m3u files. I can upload those outside of wordpress, which is what I often have to do with .mp4 files as my ISP has a 120Mb limit on file types.

The existing playlists point to both local, same directory and remote files. I could create new playlists, but would want to be sure that the playlist would only point to the remote copy, not copy to local.

When the player plays from a remote site, I’m not responsible for the bandwidth or any copyright or licensing issues. I have some licensed material and some original material and want to intermix them.

I’ll have a read and see what I need to do and also upload some samples etc.

    Hello Mark,

while HLS video streaming format does use m3u8 playlists, I do not think that a m3u8 playlist of mp3 files will work.

In HLS the m3u8 playlist file typically references a list of video segment files. So even if that would works with a list of mp3 files, they would probably all play as a single long audio track.

Have you done some basic tests with this and did it work? We didn’t had a request like this before and I do not have a m3u8 file that would reference mp3 files at hand.

    Thanks,
    Martin

thanks, but my interest is in .m3u playlists.

Perhaps an example would help. Since I can’t attach files, here is an .m3u sample file on the website I’m trying to get FVPlayer to work with https://www.ctproduced.com/samplelive.m3u

    The file contains the following
    #EXTM3U
    http://archive.org/download/mjq-1983-montreal-jazz-festival-cbc/01-Introduction.mp3
    #EXTINF:38,305 Intro
    CTImunich305.mp3

I can add the last .mp3 file via the fvplayer video add window, it would upload and be found and used in an FV Playlist. And if I try to add the file from archive.org via WordPress media manager, it copies it to the local machine and then uploads it to fvplayer, which would cause a copyright violation.

It looks like there is no way to do it. Which is odd, I guess I’m just misunderstanding something and need to pursue via the wordpress forums.

    Hello Mark,

FV Player doesn’t work with m3u playlists. I do not recall being asked for such feature yet.

You would have to build the playlist in FV Player directly using these http://archive.org/download/mjq-1983-montreal-jazz-festival-cbc/01-Introduction.mp3 and similar links.

The m3u support could be added, it could load and cache these playlists similar to how we process Vimeo albums or YouTube playlists in FV Player Pro. Ideally we would create a proper PHP SDK for these FV Player Pro routines and let people extend it for their own needs.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thank you for your helpful response.

I certainly wouldn’t ask you to add the support, I have a very limited use case of maybe 3-5 .m3u files that I’d like to publish. I do have other ways to do this, by simply taking the .mp3 files and creating a mix to post them on mixcloud, or as was the case which sent me looking for a solution, I can create a mix, turn the mix into a video and post that on youtube.

I’d have preferred doing this as individual tracks, mixcloud doesn’t allow more than 4-tracks per artist in a mix, youtube can shutdown the video and the channel if there are copyright violations. Moving the tracks to my site means I have to have a license, which I don’t have for much of this.

I’m sure eventually figure this out, thank you for reading and answering.

If you like jazz, enjoy this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXJkxPtjSU
