YouTube conflicts with Google Tag Manager

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Bug Reports › YouTube conflicts with Google Tag Manager

    Hey

I’m using FV Player 8.1.3, but have seen this on 8.1.0 too.

I have a page with multiple YT videos on it. The videos are set to display in a lightbox.

If you play the first video, you can hover to display the control bar, pause and play the video etc.

Close the first video and open a second video, and when you hover over the player the control bar does not appear, and this error appears in the JS console:

Uncaught TypeError: a.getDuration is not a function

You can see this error on https://sentio.com.au/care-videos/

    Hello Bruce,

The issue seems to be related to your Google Tag Manager script which seems to be doing some additional YouTube tracking.

Please let us know if you were setting up anything special regarding video or YouTube tracking in your Google Tag Manager.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hi Martin. Thanks for the reply. I’ve asked the client if thet are trying to do YT video tracking with GTM. I’ll let you know.

In the meantime, I removed from the GTM code from the staging site and FV Player seems to work correctly.

Thanks, and I’ll let you know if I get anything useful from the client.

    Cheers, Bruce

    Hello Bruce,

Please let us know if they did not tweak the GTM either.

We have seen a case like this before, where user had the same issue with GTM, but he was not aware of changing anything regarding video in its settings.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin

I’ve fixed this problem for the client by disabling all video event tracking via GTM:

    1 – Go to GTM
2 – Click ‘Google Tags’ tab at the top (next to ‘Accounts’ tab)
3 – Click the relevant GTM Tag
4 – Under Settings click ‘Manage automatic event detection’
    5 – Unselect ‘Video engagement’
    6 – Click Save.

The videos now play and the controls appear when you hover over them in the lightbox.

    Hope this helps. Cheers, Bruce.

    Hello Bruce,

Thank you for providing the details.

We will test with that “Video engagement” enabled to make sure our code is more resilient.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Bruce,

FV Player 8.1.4 released today avoids this issue. So the Google Tag Manager settings do not have to be adjusted anymore.

    Thanks,
    Martin
