local transcript bug due to Lets Encrypt issues

[Solved]

  • Edward 1 year, 5 months ago

    Hello,

    I get error:

    “Error loading transcript. Please try again in a minute. No transcript found”

    Testcase:

    1. Setup video loaded on BunnyCDN.
    2. Add local subtitle and transcript files (actually the same file)
    3. You should be able to see that error below the video though subtitles work fine.
    4. Move the transcript file into bunny, then it starts working as well.

    My old videos (that were initially loaded as local and then moved to bunny) still work somehow with local transcripts. But if I just open the video editor (no changes!), it refreshes video settings and I start getting that error.

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hello Edward,

    does this happen to you on videos hosted somewhere else than Bunny too?

    We are still working on bunny Stream support, so thank you for pointing this out. We will test it and see what might be causing the issue.

    Thanks,
    Maria

    Hello Maria,

    I was trying different scenario, it just stop working even with new videos hosted locally.

    How does FV player process the transcript file? Can any other plugins potentially block access to this file? Though the subtitle file (the same file) works fine.

    It seems that old videos still use a kind of player caching?

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hello Edward,

    my guess is this is caused by the fact that the Letsencrypt root certificate has expired on September 30 for the older browsers. And your server might be using that same old certificate.

    You can install the Log HTTP Requests plugin, then try to post some new video with a VTT file for transcript and check wp-admin -> Tools -> Log HTTP Requests – you should see the request to load that VTT file running from our plugin. But as I said it will likely just complain about the certificate and there is no need to check this.

    So please ask your server support to install the up-to-date certificate to let it connect to websites using Letsencrypt and it will all work again.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    thanks for your reply.

    I do see https requests to the transcript file but they don’t have any code (Status column).
    https://prnt.sc/1urj7w5
    Do you mean a root certificate that’s controlled by my hosting provider and used for all sites (including mine) on that server?

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hello Edward,

    if you click any of the remote URLs in that Log HTTP requests plugin it should open a lightbox view with the response message.

    That bad root certificate is related to the server outgoing communication – it’s likely not related to the SSL certificate running on your website.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    thank you so much! You’re right! I’ve changed certificates for prod & test sites and this solves the issue with transcripts.

    The typical response for https query to letsencrypted site is

    {
      "errors": {
        "http_request_failed": [
          "cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: certificate has expired"
        ]
      },
      "error_data": []
    }

    That means I still have issues with WP https connection to any plugin sites with letsencrypt certificate until my hosting provider upgrades the root certificate on the server.

    For instance, now foliovision.com returns code 200 only for each second request. I don’t know why. Some plugin sites return no answer at all and that’s understandable.

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hello Edward,

    if you know a bit about PHP you can create a https_ssl_verify.php file in wp-content/mu-plugins folder and put this code into it, or just put it into your theme functions.php:

    <?php
    add_filter( 'https_ssl_verify', '__return_false' );

    What would disable the SSL checks. Once your web host fixes the issue it should be removed.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    I was told by support that the issue is in WP kernel itself because it uses its own root certificates.
    I think I can live with it some time until WP issues a security(?) update.

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hello Edward,

    what WordPress version do you use? It seems new WordPress versions might have a fix for the issue.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    I have 5.6.5 version and I have to stick with 5.6 due my outdated theme. I hope wp team include the update to all WP versions as it’s really affected to all.
