How to rent out sets of videos?

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player Pay Per View › Requests and Feedback › How to rent out sets of videos?

  • Girish M. 3 years, 4 months ago

We are successfully using your PayPerView and EasyDigitalDownloads plugin to rent out (single) encrypted streaming videos.

Now there are two problems coming up:
    1) I need to rent out access not only to single videos, but also to **sets of videos (courses)**.
    2) The price of EasyDigitalDownloads is perceived as high in relation to Woocommerce or RestrictContentPro.

I tried to solve task 1) by using the “All Access” EDD extension, but it does not seem to do what I expect. So I am looking for alternatives.

I see in your documentation that I can use Woocommerce or Restrict Content Pro to rent out videos.

    My questions are these:
    – Will you support both in the future or are there plans to leave one behind? Are both routes safe for me to take?
    – Do I need the PayPerView addition when using one of these?
    – Do I understand correctly that Woocommerce or RestrictContentPro take care only of the payment, and PayPerView organizes the access to the video? But then how can I sell a set of videos?

Thank you for your time and greetings from the Netherlands,
    Michael

    Hello Michael,

thank you for reaching out to us!

    1. We do plan on supporting both EDD and WooCommerce as commerce plugins to use with our Pay Per View plugin.

I suggest you try some membership plugin to see, if it fits your needs. There’s also a free version of RCP, called only RestrictContent, you can try out.

RestrictContentPro, it is our membership plugin of choice, but you do not need to limit yourself to that. FV Player works great with most popular membership plugins: https://foliovision.com/player/advanced/membership-fv-player-compatible

Since you are talking about courses, looking into LMS plugins might be a good idea too.

    2. You do not need PPV to go along with membership plugins.

As for WooCommerce – meaning the base commerce plugin, yes ppv is needed for that: https://foliovision.com/downloads/pay-per-view-woocommerce

    3. For this purpose, a membership or an LMS plugin would be best. However, I will consult our development team about the possibility of supporting playlists in PPV.

    Thanks,
    Maria

    Hello Michael,

    3) The playlist are supported with FV Player Pay Per View (and the WooCommerce version too).

But that wouldn’t really help with your courses – instead you can setup multiple membership levels with Restrict Content Pro and then set each player to be accessible by one of these memberships. Then it will tell the user which membership level to buy to get access to the video.

I see we haven’t documented that feature yet, so we will do so.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Yes, I am setting this up with Restrict Content Pro at the moment (chewing on the details).
If you want, I can let you know when the main features are running:
Separate membership ‘levels’ for the different sets of videos (solved),
Showing the correct registration form (solved) and
Hiding the registration form if not needed (problem, discussing with support).

I wanted to keep you updated regarding my efforts to rent out groups of videos.

We have ~200 videos in groups of ~10 that we want to rent out, typically
    – this individual video
    – this group of videos
    – all videos
That means the list of offered subscriptions will be long.

I tried to solve this in RestrictContentPro.
I wanted to create posts containing
    – a public section (description) and
    – a restricted section (the video and more text).
    – In the end of the post, a registration form should be shown for users *without access*, showing the subscription alternatives for this video. For users with a valid subscription I wanted to hide the registration form.

Setting up public and restricted sections was easy, not so the registration form handling. Although there is a shortcode that is supposed to do exactly this, I could not make this work. The registration form is always showing, including the valid subscription that the visitor already has. This will confuse the visitor for sure. The support directed me to a website for freelancers.

Then I wanted to find out a way how I can limit the alternatives in the registration page from ~250 to those that the visitor is interested in, but again: custom programming is needed.

Also in Memberpress I do not see shortcodes that customize the registration form.
Maybe I will have more luck in Woocommerce extensions, like “Paywall for Woocommerce”.

    More to come…

    Hello Michael,

I see the issue with the Restrict Content Pro signup form you are running into. Did FV Player Pay Per View not give you just the right options?

With FV Player Pay Per View we let you specify the membership restriction for each player, so you shouldn’t have to use the Restrict Content Pro features for it. But you should still be able to use their shortcodes in post content if you need to give the users with access for text for the video.

We have a lot of experience with Restrict Content Pro and Easy Digital Downloads. We only run a single website with WooCommerce and everything about it is harder and more complex.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hallo Martin,
thank you for your comment; my goal is to give a user access to a *group of videos* if he decides so. This is not offered by your PPV plugin I understand.

I imagine the user experience like this:
Visitor surfs around, checking the (public) short descriptions of the videos -> feels attracted by one -> finds three links to rent this video (‘rent only this’, ‘rent the group’, ‘rent everything’).

If there is an easy solution for this, I am eager to hear from you!

    Greetings from the Netherlands,
    Michael

    Hello Girish,

please check the Pay Per View tab of FV Player Editor. If you do not see “Restrict Content Pro” in it, then please grab a fresh FV Player Pay Per Vie ZIP file from https://foliovision.com/my-licenses and reinstall from that.

Then you will be able to attribute each player to a membership level.

We will make sure it’s documented as we built it only recently for a project.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

your new PayPerView module lets me give access to the videos for certain membership levels only, this is very helpful!

My problem in the past was: When I have ~ 200 membership levels, how do I offer the visitor only a small number of them (that apply to the video that he is interested in).
Support of RCP was not helpful, and the offer from codeable was nearly 1000 $, so I solved it myself, I can give you the adapted registration.php file if interested.

Now I am trying to get your new PPV plugin running on my staging site which is a fourth level domain (like staging.my.videos.com).
I got it running without problems on a third level subdomain (like staging.videos.com). Can the number of subdomain levels make a difference for this plugin?

    Greetings,
    Michael

    Hello Girish,

sorry about the late reply – no, the 4th level domain should not matter. What exact issues you are running into? Did it keep saying your license key is wrong?

I realized the improved Restrict Content Pro support in FV Player Pay Per View was not released yet. Please grab a fresh FV Player Pay Per Vie ZIP file from https://foliovision.com/my-licenses and reinstall from that.

Then you can pick which membership level belongs to which player and it should fix your issue – see the guide here: https://foliovision.com/2022/02/video-subscription-wordpress -> How does it work?

    Thanks,
    Martin
