WEBM encoded file html5:Video not properly encoded error

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › WEBM encoded file html5:Video not properly encoded error

  • Stuart Osborne 5 years, 7 months ago

I have encoded a file to Webm from an mp4 file, the mp4 file plays correctly on fvplayer but the webm comes up with HTML5 not properly encoded when i try to play it the admin says html file ok (see attachment).
This seems very similar to the problem we originally had with the MP4s erroring on 2 hour videos which you fixed a while ago. do you think the issue is the same ?

    Hi Stuart,

So If you understand properly, your admin checker says the video is fine but it won’t play, right?

Can you please send us a link to your website with that particular video embedded on it?

    Thanks for using our player,
    Juraj

    Hello Stuart,

that video plays fine for me, but when I try to seek in it the error occurs. I tried to open the video link directly in Chrome and it would do the same thing. But it would work just fine in Firefox.

So I’m not sure if it’s not just some Chrome bug.

MP4 is supported in almost all the browsers now, what is your reason to use WebM?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin

Thanks for the feedback, Yes it might be a bug in chrome but i have Googled it and cannot find anyone else reporting the same problem, I have also tried it using edge.
The reason for testing webm is 2 fold one we can make the file size smaller than mp4 with the same quality but more importantly we need to put the same video on Protected USB sticks webm decrypts the webm fine and plays no problem but the same as mp4 stutters badly, so we were trying to see if we can use webm across the board rather than have loads of different versions for different things, i tried webm as i thought folio player supported it

    Hello Stuart,

I tried to play the video in an older Chromium version (it’s the open source version of Chrome) and it’s failing in that one as well. So if there is a bug in Chrome, it’s around for a while.

I can only suggest you to try some other encoder.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

I thought that using your player would bypass any problems with the browser,
I can stream the same file using VLC media player and it works perfectly. I obviously don’t fully understand the correlation between browsers, players, websites etc so it does get confusing as to why i can strean one way and not another.

    Hello Stuart,

video files such as MP4 or WebM are played directly by the browser HTML5 engine, no matter which video player for web you choose – JW Player, FV Player, Video.js, it doesn’t matter.

Only difference is when your browser doesn’t support H264 codec, then it has to play MP4 with Flash. Or if it’s a HLS stream – then it has to play it with the HLS.js library, as HLS is only natively supported by Safari and Android (but the support there is not perfect, that’s why we use HLS.js there as well).

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Stuart,

I am experiencing the same issue. I can see you that you figure it out – what was the fix?

    Thanks,
    Peter
