When I press play video on my android device, the flowplayer plugin first shows a grey blank screen with a picture of a video icon, then if I tap it again you get a play button, and if you press that eventually the video starts to load up and plays. So altogether Iyou have to press or tap 3 times before the video starts to load up and evenyually staert to play.
A user visiting the site would not know after the first ‘tap’ to tap the screen again as there is no play button displayed at that point, only a grey screen with a grey icon in the middle.
Is this normal?I have been testing it on my Android phone device.

Hello Nate,
please let us know what Android version you are using. Best if you visit http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ on the Android and write down the user agent string from there.
If you could also send over the URL where we can see the issue, that would be great. What video type are you using?
Thanks,
MartinHi,
I am using Mp4. I noticed the problem does not happen on Apple devices like iphone, but only on Android phone, don’t know about Android tablets.I visited http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ on my Android phone and could not get the entire string because, guess what, their site is not mobile responsive. At least not on my android device. The best I could make out, with some characters missing, was:
Mozilla/5.0(Linux;U;Android 4.3;en-gb;GT-i9300Build/Jss15J)App53430(KHTML.LikeGecko) Version/4.0Mobilesafari/53430
That is all I could make out.
An URL you could check on my site is: http://www.reviews4u.com/is-there-a-need-for-family-tree-software/
As said, i am using MP4’s , incliuding on the above URL.
Thanks,
Nathan.
Hello Nate,
thank you for the details. I checked for some other site and this one is responsive: http://www.whatsmyua.com/
I’m not having the issue on Samsung Android 4.4.4 with stock browser. I should be able to get my hands on Android 4.3 later today.
Thanks,
MartinHello Nathan,
I’m sorry about the delay, could you please check if it’s happening with the first video here as well? https://foliovision.com/player/demos/amazon-signed-urls
Thanks,
MartinHi,
Exactly the same I’m afraid. I put in the url on my android mobile and it was the same problem as before.
I should ask at this point whether this is something that only happens on my Android Version (Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III, Android OS, v 4.3) or has it happened on any other too?
It is unfortunately a phone that many people use. Thanks,
Nathan.Hello Nathan,
could you please look at the following links on your Samsung mobile?
1) https://foliovision.com/html/samsung1.html
2) https://foliovision.com/html/samsung2.html
3) https://foliovision.com/html/samsung3.htmlPlease let us know how it behaves in each case. Does it still require multiple clicks (taps) to get the video play? Please wait a few seconds before tapping it again.
Thanks,
MartinHi,
Well, they all behave completely differently.
No.1 seems to work the best, though there is no play button in the centre of the screen, just in the player controls below, and it does not appear to be fully mobile responsive.
No.2 is basically the same problem as before, you have to tap twice to get it to play. it does however seem to be responsive,
No.3 is exactly the same as No.2, except that when you first load the page there is no video player, just a single play button against a blank white background.
So of the three I’d say No.1 is almost there.
Thanks,
Nathan.
Hello Nate,
so the issue is present even when using core Flowplayer without any changes.
4) Please check here if it happens even with Flowplayer 5: https://foliovision.com/html/samsung4.html
5) Does it depend on if you are using cellular network or a Wifi connection?
6) Are you using the stock browser? Is there any setting it in to lower the data consumption? There might be some custom Samsung setting in it.
Thanks,
MartinHello Nate,
could you please check if https://foliovision.com/html/samsung2.html and https://foliovision.com/html/samsung3.html work well for you in Google Chrome on your Samsung phone?
Thanks,
MartinHello Nate,
could you please retry https://foliovision.com/html/samsung2.html in stock browser? I made a small tweak to it.
Thanks,
MartinHello Nate,
could you please also test the player on this URL? http://demos.flowplayer.org/basics/minimal.html It’s just a single player, so please check if it plays with one tap.
Thanks,
MartinIt’s a pleasure. But is there going to be any fix for the problem? It has got worse now since the latest updates, on Android phone AWS hosted videos no longer play at all. After a few taps it just skips to the end of the video and stays stuck if you replay it. Self-hosted videos still play, but the same problem as before. I haven’t checked it on other mobiles or iphone yet. Is this a new bug or glitch?
Nathan.
Hello Nate,
sorry about no update, I haven’t heard back from core Flowplayer team yet, so I asked again.
I’m not noticing issues with videos on Amazon S3 nor CloudFront on Android. Perhaps there is some other issue. Could you please send over the URL of your website where we can see it?
Thanks,
MartinHi Martin,
Yes, it seems that it was because of another issue, though I have no idea what.
It may have been because of an html5.js file in the WP theme that needed updating or even just the phone itself needed re-booting, which doesn’t make any sense to me at all, but now the videos are playing again in the Android stock browser, and Google Chrome, although still with the original glitch.I look forward to any Flowplayer Core update to resolve the original problem, if they do make one. This version of Samsung Android is still quite widely used by a lot of people!
Thanks,
Nathan.
