Firefox android encoding?

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Firefox android encoding?

Hello! It seems like our encoding settings from last year which checked out well across the board are having issues in firefox on a Samsung tablet, Android 4.04. I’m not able to reproduce the error or any troubleshooting info, but I don’t have that device. We’re serving up 2 different files, regular and mobile. Any thoughts what we can do to support that combination?

    Hello Wendy,

could you please send us the video page URL (or use video checker to send it to us), so we could test this on our devices?

Does it play on the built-in browser?

I was using Samsung Galaxy Tab 2nd generation and it played the videos just fine. It had a buggy HLS implementation, but I think that’s experimental feature for Android.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

She says any film on this page, from season 2 tab http://wglg.org/films/

(Choose a film to get to the video)

    From the person testing:

“First video seems to work, but then it fails after you try to play another one. Or Firefox crashes entirely.”

    Does built-in browser work?

“Yep, Chrome and Android built-in browser play perfectly (same thing with Dolphin – a crappy browser), its just Firefox that is having serious issues.”

    Thanks,
    Wendy

    Hello Wendy,

    thank you for detailed report.

Could you please ask your tester to also:

    1) Play the video at http://foliovision.com and then on http://foliovision.com/2014/03/wordpress-video-playlists ?

    2) Play the videos one by one on https://flowplayer.org/player/ ?

This might be a Firefox bug on Android. It might be related to specific device as well.

There were issues with Chrome on Windows 1 year ago and now they are fixed. Hopefully these browsers will catch up to HTML5 video fast.

    Thanks,
    Martin

She says your example video plays fine. But I think the codec checks out, will check again.

    Hi Martin, one more question.

    http://www.itsproducts.com/?p=3230

I can watch the video in pc but cannot watch it in my Samsung Galaxy S3 ( Android) device.
I got an error message “htmls:video file not found”

The video size is small just 4M and seems the path in the palyer is correct.

    Thank again !

    Hello Ray,

the video plays for me on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The User agent string is:

    “Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.04; sk-sk; GT-P3100 Build/IMM76D) AppleWebKit/534.30 (HTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Safari/534.40”

    Could you please:

    1) Let us know what is your user agent by visiting this page? http://www.whatsmyuseragent.com/

    2) Could you please check if restarting the device helps?

    Hello Wendy,

“Forbidden Voices” on the http://wglg.org/films/ website crashed the browser on the above Samsung tablet. But then I was able to play it as well as some other movie – “Gulabi Gang”. I was using the built-in browser.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks Martin !
I tried to visit the http://www.whatismyuseragent.com but seems the service is HTTP Error 403.14- Forbidden. I may try it later.

I found that my Galaxy S3 and Tablet 10.1 can play the MP4 video file ( which stored in the root directory) in Wifi connection, but when I turn off the wifi and switched to 4G, the video file could not be played. and pop up the error message: html5: video file not found and the link of the video.

    Thanks
    Ray

    Hello Ray,

I see, looks like we will have to build some kind of fallback for it – if the video fails, we will have to look for the mobile video. Currently the mobile video is based on the screen size as we don’t want to serve low quality video to tablets with wifi.

We might just add this into our quality switching.

    Thanks,
    Martin
