Encrypting AWS video URLs

[Solved]

    Hi guys,
We’ve been using S3FlowShield to encrypt our AWS URLs on the front end but they’ve not updated the plugin for quite some time and our ticket with them has resulted in a “we’re working on a new version but have no eta” response. In the meantime we started taking a look at your documentation on encryption via AWS/Elastic Transcoding helpfile but keep getting stuck with errors.
What’s the best way for us to protect our AWS URLs on the front end or our sites?
Any help or advice would be super appreciated as we’re a bit stuck at the moment,
    Thank you!
    Fiona

    Hi Fiona,

S3FlowShield doesn’t really encrypt the content, it just uses a signature that prevents other websites from hotlinking your videos. This can also be done via AWS itself (FV Player supports it, you can read more about it in our guide Serving Private Videos with Amazon S3).

The encryption of the actual video files that can be done via the Amazon Elastic Transcoder will make them inaccessible without the proper decryption key. That means they are protected from hotlinking and even if someone manages to download the video, he won’t see the content of the video – just a black screen.

FV Player Pro can deliver the encrypted videos in HLS format, as you probably already read in the guide. If you were following it and got stuck, just let me know where and I’ll try to help.

If you are in a hurry, we offer a service package called Amazon VIP DRM Encoding Bundle, which will basically have us set your encrypted HLS distribution for you, directly on your site.

    Thanks,
    Eduard

    Hi Eduard,

Thank you so much for responding and for clearing up what S3 does, to be honest it would be great to use just Flowplayer as we’ve got our Pro license and we do like to run installs with as few plugins as possible!

I was using the HLS guide you link to and we finally got it working … mostly but I’ll also take a look at the Serving Private Videos guide because that looks like it might clear up some of the questions I have.

I will definitely shout if we run into any more problems and thank you again for your quick response!
    Fiona
