Quality Switcher on YouTube Videos

I’m wondering why you don’t include a quality switcher for YouTube videos.

According to your documentation, FV Player automatically picks the quality based on the user’s internet connection.

My problem with this implementation is a majority of internet users are on metered connections. And if the connection is fast, FV Player will pick the highest quality, causing the user to loose bandwidth unintentionally.

Sometimes, the connection might be slow but a user might be willing to experience some buffering to watch high resolution videos.

Why can you include it and let the users device what they want?

    Hello Daniel,

thank you for bringing up the metered bandwidth issue.

Unfortunately the YouTube Player API has removed the quality control back in October 2019: https://developers.google.com/youtube/iframe_api_reference#october-24,-2019

So I don’t see a practical way of changing this.

I wonder if downloading the YouTube videos into your own video hosting where you are in control of the video serving could be a solution.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    Thanks for your reply.

I intend to host videos on YouTube but get FV Player Pro to remove all that branding using the advanced YouTube embedding option on your plugin.

I have seen the demos and I’m really impressed. I’m thinking it’s the only way to avoid astronomical fees associated with video hosting.

I have looked at BunnyCDN, which is great for beginners. Bandwidth costs around $5/TB and around $0.02/GB of storage.

But once the platform I’m thinking of setting up grows, VideoPress by WordPress will be a great solution. It costs $10/month (paid yearly = $120) for unlimited bandwidth and up to 1TB of storage.

However, the advanced embedding function on FV Player Pro will help me avoid extra costs while still making videos appear custom-hosted on my platform.

Now I’m back to brainstorming because quality switcher on YouTube videos is not supported.

Thanks for letting me know where the problem is.
