“Get Flash” notice on iOS devices

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › “Get Flash” notice on iOS devices

  • Martin 11 years, 11 months ago

In the previous version on an iPad or other iOS device if there was a FLV video loaded in a player there would simply be a line over the player button and the video wouldn’t play. The splash screen was still available and it looked like a normal player.

In the new version if a FLV video is loaded in the player all you get is an ugly white box that directs you to download flash.

    Hello Sozo,

    thanks for the suggestions!

We should really try to show at least the splash image, if the video won’t play on the iOS device.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,

I noticed in this most recent update there is still the screen that advises users to download flash when viewing from their iPad. I think you should take that off completely.

iPad and other iOS devices will never use flash and telling them to do so is unhelpful. I suggest you go back to the previous version options where there was simply a line across the play button indicating the video can’t play.

    Thanks.

    Hello Sozo,

    we changed

“html5: Unsupported video format. Try installing Adobe Flash.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer””

    to

    “html5: Unsupported video format.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer”

We also set the error message background to transparent, so you can see the splash image below it.

We will aim to create a special icon which will show up when the browser can’t play the video.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Martin,

Just updated to the latest version and noticed you’ve added the text we talked about but the instructions to download flash are still there? I thought we agreed those would be removed as they don’t apply to the device.

This needs to take into account that not all sites give a mobile version for iPads for example. In fact, I’ve found most sites use the non mobile version for iPads while other iOS devices are directed to the mobile versions.

It would be better not to have iOS devices giving wrong information that clearly doesn’t apply to them.

What do you think about changing to wording from “unsupported video file” to “unsupported video file for device” letting them know the device can’t play the video and that it is not a problem with the website itself.

Shouldn’t we just go back to how things displayed originally in version like 1.2 where it said nothing at all but clearly showed the video file couldn’t be played?

    Thanks

    Hello Sozo,

sorry about the delay here, we still want to improve this, it’s just a bit more complex than it seems.

We must not only detect iOS devices, but also put in some API hook which gets triggered once this file format error occurs – so the customized error message won’t overrule any other error messages.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Sozo,

we just released version 2.1.21. If the video can’t be played without Flash and you are using iPod, iPad, iPhone or Android, it shows the message:

“Unsupported video format. Please use a Flash compatible device.”

    Instead of default:

“Unsupported video format. Try installing Adobe Flash.

    get.adobe.com/flashplayer”

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Sozo,

version 2.1.26 shows a striked-over play icon each time you can’t play the video.

    Thanks,
    Martin
