[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › Youtube video – caption doesn’t appear

  • Lise 10 years, 10 months ago

    Hi there !
I just start with yout pluggin. I am using a video from youtube and would like to add caption. The video works very well but the caption doesn’t appear. I have followed the explanation there:
    http://foliovision.com/player/subtitles
but there is no caption at all on the video.
Is there other tricks to know ? I have edit my caption with TextEdit save as plain text.

    Thank you,

    Hello Lise,

we are working on a full featured YouTube integration (we have first alpha version for our internal testing ready).

So what you are getting now is just a very basic Youtube integration, but things will dramatically improve once we finish the YouTube integration (this will enable use of ads, splash screen, redirection, popups).

The integration should be in working condition next week. We should be able to make it work with subtitles as well.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Great! Could you let me know when it will be available ?
Thanks Martin for your quick answer,
    Lise

    Hello Lise,

I’ll update the thread when new version with Youtube integration is released and we will see where we stand with the caption/subtitles.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Lise,

latest version of FV Player Pro (available to licensed users of FV Flowplayer) now provides a proper YouTube embedding: http://foliovision.com/2014/07/playing-youtube-videos

We tested the subtitles in VTT format and they worked fine.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Thank you for your answer. Any chance to try it before buying the licence?
I have a bad experience with another player which should works well and finally it didn’t. So I am ready to buy it, but I just would like to be sure that I am buying something usefull for me…

I look foward to hearing from you,
    Best,
    Lise

    Hello Lise,

if you can post your subtitles in VTT format, then we can put up a demo for your.

The instructions are here, you would have to take care of the first step only: http://foliovision.com/player/subtitles

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

Sure, please find enclosed my subtitles in VTT. So just to be sure, the Player which works is not the one which go with wordpress right?

    Thanks for the demo,
    Lise

    Hello Lise,

could you please post a link to the YouTube video where these subtitles should be used?

Our plugin works with WordPress, but it’s not included in WordPress automatically – it has to be installed separately and it also needs the license.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Here the link to the YouTube video:

Another question, does the Player works with Vimeo or not?

    Thank you,
    Lise

    Hi Martin,

I have tried, but I ma sorry to say that it didn’t work on my IOS, Iphone 5S.

Thank you very much for your time.
Could you please take off my files, I mean at my least my subtitles from your website. I will be please to share it with you later but for the moment I am not ready to put it online for public access.

    Thank you,
    Lise

    Hi Martin,

Maybe it works with Vimeo. Could put a demo online with a video embed in Vimeo and my subtitles files? (no matter what is the video, what is important for me is the have the subtitles display when I watch the video on an iphone)

    Thanks,
    Lise

    Hello Lise,

unfortunately iPhone doesn’t support HTML5 subtitles. The subtitles have to be encoded in the MP4 file – here’s how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiBJtF7bQOs That guide uses HandBrake which we also recommend: http://foliovision.com/player/encoding

It won’t encode the subtitles into the picture, but add the actual subtitles text to a new stream, so they can be disabled/enabled when playing.

Zencoder can also get the job done for you: http://blog.zencoder.com/2012/07/13/closed-captioning-for-web-mobile-and-tv/ — “Zencoder can add captions to HTTP Live Streaming videos for iOS.”

However – Vimeo won’t keep the subtiles in the MP4 file. So you might need to host your MP4s somewhere else. You can use Amazon CloudFront, but it’s much more complex than just using YouTube or Vimeo: http://foliovision.com/player/secure-amazon-s3-guide

A demo for this can be found here: http://foliovision.com/player/demos/built-in-subtitles-iphone

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

If I use the plugin with WordPress (with the licence) – always with the idea to use link from YouTube with my on caption VTT – would it works on Ipad (I have understand that it will not works on Iphone but any chance on Ipad?)

    Thanks,
    Lise

    Martin 11 years ago

    Hello Lise,

yes, it works on iPad, but not in iPhone. You can check it out here: https://foliovision.com/player/demos/youtube-embedding

For iPhone, you really have to encode the subtitles into the MP4 file. Notice, that the first YouTube video on the above page features this kind of subtitles (it can be enabled), so there might be a way of doing this on YouTube.

    Thanks,
    Martin
