Sprite Splash Image – How To

[Solved]

  • mdchev 9 years, 8 months ago

The load load times are extremely long when have a gallery of videos on a page, and I was wondering if anybody has any tips on how I could implement a sprite file for all my splash images.

I know how to create sprites and do the css, what I can’t seem to figure out is the best approach of getting it to work with the wordpress plugin FV Player.

Is there a way to use straight html instead of the shortcode, to insert my videos onto a page. I think if i could do that, I would be able to add classes that call the sprite, any ideas?

    Hello mdchev,

I see your issue. Are you using a CDN for your website? Perhaps using that could improve your load times of these images and it would be a benefit for your site in overall.

I see that we could be adding a special class for each playlist thumbnail which would be basted on the video file name (how-to-understand-css.mp4 would become .how-to-understand-css class). I’ll mention this in our team meeting.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi mdchev,

Creating sprites from the thumbnail files would be an administrative nightmare. Martin’s suggestion of getting a CDN is a good one. KeyCDN is almost free, with no minimum usage requirement or monthly fee.

    Could you try KeyCDN first?

Thank you guys for your quick response. I am actually using Rackspace CloudFiles, which itself is a CDN or I’ve added their CDN to my CloudFiles, it’s been awhile so i don’t remember how it’s setup. But none the less, I am using a CDN to service both my video and images.

My site may not load as slowly as I was thinking, or maybe I was being to critical. I think in the back of my head, I just new for each of the videos I’m placing on a page is another two html requests, and thought it would be nice if i could just load one image instead of 20 or 30.

my site is http://matthewchevalier.com obviously once it’s cached it works great, my concern was for mobile users. At the end of the day, the answer is probably in my site design and how much i put on a single page.

but I’m open to suggestions or feedback if you have any.

    thank you,
    matt
