Reduce Video Latency and AWS Segment Duration Setting

    Hi Support Team,

One of our viewer report video latency when switching quality (HLS changing from 360p to 720p in Android Chrome browser). I know it is not the FV player issue, but the segment size caused. The default size in AWS Elastic Transcoder is 10 sec, and some years ago, apple suggest 10 sec as well. And I found the article in your website is also recommend 10 sec.
    https://foliovision.com/player/securing-your-video/hls-stream

However, it seems that the newest suggestion from apple is 6 sec.
    https://developer.apple.com/documentation/http_live_streaming/hls_authoring_specification_for_apple_devices

7.5. Target durations SHOULD be 6 seconds.

7.6. Segment durations SHOULD be nominally 6 seconds (e.g., NTSC 29.97 may be 6.006 seconds).

7.7. Media segments MUST NOT exceed the target duration by more than 0.5 seconds.

It is not a high priority question just want to ask for your suggestion. What’s your recommendation? Still go 10 sec for some reasons? such as support wider devices?
    Thank you,

    Vincent

    Hello Bin,

I have seen a lot of HLS streams with segment duration of 6 seconds, including the ones on Vimeo. To you can safely use 6 seconds.

Some expert article about this can be found here: https://bitmovin.com/mpeg-dash-hls-segment-length/

    Thanks,
    Martin
