Protect embedded Vimeo video playback from locally saved web pages

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Protect embedded Vimeo video playback from locally saved web pages

  • Coen 1 year, 10 months ago

    Dear FV,
I have an online membership site with embedded Vimeo video’s. I see users saving my web pages (just file->save in the browser) in order to re-load it, from their own PC, into their browser at a later moment (e.g. when their membership has expired).
This sort of bypasses the Vimeo domain embedding protection (handled by referrer) as that is also stored in the saved webpage and they can freely view the videos.
My question is if this can be protected by FV player, and if yes, how?

    Hello Coen,

Are you sure it works with just saving of the web pages? The referrer should not be kept that way.

Do you use the Vimeo iframe embed codes or the Vimeo Pro video files (MP4 and HLS) links?

We do provide a way of making the Vimeo videos harder to download, using FV Player Vimeo Security: https://foliovision.com/store/fv-player-vimeo-security

With that plugin the browser extensions fail to download the Vimeo videos posted with FV Player Pro.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I use the Vimeo iframe embed codes and have the settings in Vimeo set so it should only play video’s via my domain.
Playing (or embedding) the video’s on other domains result in the correct block but saving the webpage and reloading it on the same PC results in a webpage with playable content. This seems to be a known problem, but it is one I really need to block.

    Hello Coen,

With FV Player Pro you can just set the videos as “Private” on Vimeo. So you wouldn’t run into any issues with referrer.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks Martin,

Perhaps this is indeed a solution. I might give it a try on one of our playgrounds.
If I want to start using the FV player PRO, I will have to update my current site, which has 100+ video’s on just as many pages/posts.
Is there an easy way of getting this done?

    Hello Coen,

Please refer to this FAQ: https://foliovision.com/player/faq-intro/fv-player-faq#convert-q

If your Vimeo iframes are posted in the post content it will work.

    Thanks,
    Martin
