More bandwith options, “real” HD, and bandwith options display discrepancy

[Solved]

    Hi,
    I have a couple of HLS encrypted videos online now that are served via S3/Cloudfront. It’s working fine so far. I am using the standard options in Elastic Transcoder:

    System Preset: HLS 2M (1024×576)
    System Preset: HLS_1M (640×360)
    System Preset: HLS 400k (400×224)

    Couple of questions:

    1. I would like to offer one more option, namely “real” HD at 1280×720, at 3 or 3,5 Mbit. (or even 1920x1080p) I have tried adding a preset for that, but the transcoder wouldn’t accept it for some reason. Has anyone tried this successfully?

    2. In Chrome browser on PC, when one clicks on the Bandwith Icon, a popup displays the available formats: 576p, 360p and 224p. This is correct. But the Bandwith Icon displays the currently set format as HD, SD or M. I find this inconsistent. I would like all options to be displayed as 576p, 360p etc. Is this possible?

    3. Since there seem to be only three bandwiths the player switches between, (?) I wonder what happens if one is offering more bandwiths, e.g. 720p, 576p, 360p, 224p?

    (BTW: 1024×576 is actually SD resolution, the “real” HD formats are 720p and 1080p. To eliminate confusion, maybe we should just stick with the numbers, as do youtube and vimeo.)

    Thanks,
    Carl.

    Hello Carl,

    1) You can createa as many presets as you need. If you get an error message, it’s good to really check what it says. For example if you are creating a 1920×1080 preset it need you to increate the h264 encoding level from 3 to 4. While 3 is enough for lower resolutions.

    We are going to write documentation for the new AWS MediaConvert tool, perhaps it will make this easier.

    2) We made a decision to only provide a simple labels as you noted as showing 360p and others would just look too crowded in the control bar. So that way for 576p and 360p might be classified as SD, is that what’s happening?

    3) FV Player will pick the best quality based on bandwidth, you can provide as many qualities in your HLS as you need to. The control bar will show both 1280p and 720 as HD, but that’s to give users an idea they are looking at a HD video.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
    1. I had the correct setings (level 4.1) for the encoding. The error messages are really cryptic… I will try again.

    I have been looking at the new amazon transcoding tool, but although I have deep knowledge about codecs, I find the interface difficult to work with. Some documentation on this would be highly appreciated.

    2. Ok, I understand you simplify the display, but then 1024×576 (576p) should be classified as SD, not HD.

    So summing it up:
    Everything under 480p -> M
    480p and 576p -> SD
    720p and 1080p -> HD

    3. Thanks for all the clarification. So my only remaining prblem is that 576p is incorrectly displayed as HD.

    Thanks,
    Carl.

    Hello Carl,

    1) The Amazon MediaConvert configuration can be saved in JSON format. So I’m hoping we can make it a lot easier by providing the required presets in a single file which you would just import. We will see about that as we work on our guide.

    3) We will adjust it so that 576p is only classified as “HD” if there is no actual video at or above 720p.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Carl,

    3) This is fixed in today’s release – FV Player 7.3.9.727.

    Thanks,
    Martin
