YouTube/self-hosted mixed playlist

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Bug Reports › YouTube/self-hosted mixed playlist

  • Pádraig Ó Beirn 6 years, 5 months ago

    Hi guys,

This is a follow-up to the following ticket which was resolved for YouTube-only playlists but I’ll just list it here for reference.
    https://foliovision.com/support/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/bug-reports/youtube-playlist-glitch

There appears to be an issue (which may or may not be related to the above) with mixed YouTube/self-hosted playlists which only occurs on mobile and tablet (tested on android Galaxy Note 4, Note 8 and Tab 10.1).
    To replicate, go to https://www.gortskehy.com/video-gallery/
Scroll down to the Geography section.
“Our visit to Mount Etna” is a YouTube video (don’t click on it). The other three are self-hosted. On an android mobile device play on any of the three self-hosted videos FIRST.

Expected behaviour: The video should play in the placeholder.
Actual behaviour: The video sound can be heard but the placeholder doesn’t show the actual video. It shows the splash image of the YouTube video.

Compare, for example with the History section on that page which contains only self-hosted videos and works as expected.
Playing YouTube videos in a mixed YouTube/self-hosted playlist work as expected. In the Science, Technology & Engineering section, for example, playing the YouTube video ‘Space is Amazing’ works fine but the self-hosted ‘BT Young Scientist’ video can be heard but not seen.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Playing a YouTube video in the playlist FIRST and then playing a self-hosted video works fine. The problem occurs when you try to play a self-hosted video first.

Using WordPress 4.9.8 and FV Player Pro 7.3.4.727

If you need any further information just let me know.

    Many thanks,

    Pádraig

    Hello Pádraig,

is that the built-in Samsung Internet browser? It’s an outdated version of Google Chrome, so it’s always a bit special.

Please provide the full user agent string for at least one of these devices, you can find it on http://www.useragentstring.com/

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thanks for the prompt reply Martin,

Tested on Google chrome browser (version 71) on all three android devices.

User agent details for the Samsung Note 8
    Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 8.0.0; SM-N950F) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/71.0.3578.83 Mobile Safari/537.36

If you need more details just let me know.

    Thanks again,

    Pádraig

    Hi Martin,

I just noticed that there is a Foliovision YouTube + mp4 playlist at the bottom of the following page which exhibits the same behaviour:
    https://foliovision.com/player/demos/youtube-playlist-support

Click on the Swan Lake mp4 first and you can hear the music but not see the video.
Click on the YouTube video first and then the mp4 – both play fine.

It’s definitely common to the three android devices I used but would be worth testing also on iPhone/ipad.

It’s not a problem on Windows desktop for me using Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Edge.

    Thanks,

    Pádraig

    Hello Pádraig,

due to the mobile limitations we preload the YouTube iframe before the playback actually begins. So in case like this when you play a MP4 video before YouTube we will have to hide the iframe and then make it visible again when it’s needed.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Ah, ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the update Martin. ??

    Hello Pádraig,

the fix has been released in FV Player Pro 7.3.5.727 Beta. You can check it on https://foliovision.com/player/demos/youtube-embedding -> Checking mixed playlist issues on the YouTube, MP4 playlist right there.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    That’s great Martin!

Thanks for all your work on it. I had a look at the FV YouTube embedding page and it works as expected. Unlike the other YouTube playlists on that page, the mixed YouTube videos need to be tapped twice to play. Maybe this is because the YouTube iframe has to be loaded first – it’s not a big deal just letting you know.

If I switch from Release to Beta in my own dashboard am I getting FV Player Pro 7.3.5.727 beta? I tried testing the fix by switching to beta on my own website and it’s still showing the old behaviour. I cleared cache etc. but maybe the beta is not yet version 7.3.5.727. Or maybe you have something enabled that I don’t. Are there any settings relating to Playlists that I should have ticked?

    Thanks again,

    Pádraig

    Hello Pádraig,

with the YouTube it works as you described. The tap has to be targeted to the iframe directly. So if the user clicks the playlist thumb, it has to bring up that iframe into the player area asking user to tap it once again. On new mobile OS we could change this a bit to play the video muted – only requiring a single tap.

After you switch to FV Player Pro Beta you should see the upgrade to version 7.3.5.727 available on your Plugins screen.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thanks again for the excellent support Martin,

I have decided to use Amazon S3 for delivering my larger videos instead of YouTube. It’s a great workaround to avoid the YouTube iframe double tap in playlists on mobile. The video quality is better and it integrates seamlessly with the smaller playlist videos hosted on my own server. It’s great that FV Player is so flexible to allow for this.

Best wishes to you and the team for 2019. :-)
