Vimeo captions remain enabled by default

[Solved]

    Hey Foliovision,

    Enjoying working with your player in the 2.0 version of my online learning website. I did encounter a weird issue where I specifically turn captions/subtitles “off” in the settings and still they are always automatically enabled on every Vimeo video that has them.

    Most of my students will not use the captions so I really need to have them off by default.

    Just to be clear, I added a screenshot of how I set things. That checkmark does not seem to make a difference. Checked, unchecked, video captions always show up.

    I also disabled them on a page, then waited and then refreshed the page to see if it had to do with “memory” of my preferences, just like the location in the video, but that doesnt help either.

    Hello Robert,

    We we unable to recreate the issue on our dev side, the setting works as it should for us.

    Please try turning that option off and purging your cache.

    Thanks,
    Juraj

    Hey Juraj,

    First of all, thank you for checking it out!

    I have more details that you actually might be able to reproduce.

    The situation is as follows:
    – When visiting a page for the first time and playing a video subtitles are indeed off. No problems there.
    – When the subtitles are enabled, they will remain enabled, also when reloading the page. This is also fine behaviour. It’s good that the player remembers.
    – BUT even after turning the subtitles off and then reloading the page, the player seems to remember it wrong and immediately shows subtitles again the next time te page is visited. It’s impossible to turn the subtitles off by default until you delete all website cookies.

    Again, thanks for taking the time to investigate.

    Hello Robert,

    you are right that the subtitles activation is remembered. I think that behavior is desired.

    You can use a JavaScript code like this to make sure it’s not remembered:

    try {
      delete(localStorage.fv_player_subtitle);
    } catch(e) {}

    Thanks,
    Martin
