Quality switching breaks the video

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Quality switching breaks the video

  • Jeongseung P. 5 years, 3 months ago

I have followed the instructions on how to do quality switching. The naming schemes are exactly like I specified in the settings, and all the videos are in one single secure amazon S3 bucket. Each of the different resolutions can be played back as individually embedded videos, but when I try to switch quality, it doesn’t work.

It first plays the video at default resolution, but when I change the quality the player goes crazy. I have included images of the error screen and the video checker screen. None of this happens without quality switching.

    Thank you very much.

    Hello Jeongseung,

it seems the signature is only calculated once and then used for all the video qualities. That is incorrect of course.

We will get it fixed to calculate a new signature for each video quality.

This issue didn’t occur to use as we use the S3 Ajax option: foliovision.com/2017/04/download-link-with-simple-history-tracking#amazon-s3-ajax

    Thanks,
    Martin

Thank you. The issue is now fixed. But, the 1080p video stutters now that ajax is on. This doesn’t happen with ajax disabled. I would be very thankful if you were to help me with this.

Lastly, I have just one more issue. While “inspect element” didn’t easily show the video URL, a chrome plugin call “video downloader plus” easily found the videos.

I’ve noticed this doesn’t happen on your demo pages, so I suspect this has to do with the S3 video hosting. I’ve made the bucket unavailable to public, and I have encrypted the video files. Is there anything more I should do to increase security just a little more?

Again, Thank you very much for your help!

The stuttering is now fixed. I simply turned Ajax on and off. I hope this won’t be an issue in the future

    Hello Jeongseung,

FV Player Pro 7.4.13.727 is out and it fixes thase bad AWS S3 signatures for different video qualities with MP4.

I’m not sure why the 1080p video would run into any issue with that S3 Ajax option.

Video Downloader Plus doesn’t seem to be as powerful as Video DownloadHelper. But both can download an MP4 video, even if it has the URL signature added to it. The encrypted HLS with FV Player Pro provides does stop it though.

Which demo pages did you test on?

I should add that the main point in adding the URL signature is to stop other websites from hotlinking your videos.

    Thanks,
    Martin

If you don’t see the update available, please make sure you are on the Beta version: https://foliovision.com/player/basic-setup/switching-fv-player-pro-to-beta

If your WordPress didn’t find the update yet, you can download it by hand from https://foliovision.com/my-licenses

    Thanks,
    Martin

I don’t know too much about HSL, but I’ve heard that it has automatic quality switching. In that case, is manual quality switching still an option?

Also I think I read somewhere that amazon cloudfront offers better download protection, but I can’t find the article again. Would that offer noticeably better protection?

    Thank you very much.

    Hello Jeongseung,

FV Player does the automated quality switching on it but there is a button to pick the quality by hand too.

What you need to really protect your videos is the encryption. With FV Player Coconut it will be simple – thanks to the amazing Coconut.co video encoding (and encryption) service which it integrates.

Cloudfront can only block referrers or check the URL signature.

    Thanks,
    Martin
