Popunders break the player on mobile

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Popunders break the player on mobile

  • hentaipulse 8 years, 1 month ago

Hi, any popunder code breaks the player on mobile, causing videos not to play.

I’ve tried this with multiple popunder providers (popads, admaven, bongacash).

Basically what happens is, the page with the player / video on it loads, then you press play and the popunder appears, you close the popunder and go back to the video, the player then is in a “playing” state where the bottom left play button has turned into a pause button but the video doesn’t start playing, hitting the pause button does nothing and skipping through the video using the timeline just produces still images, going fullscreen doesn’t fix it either.

Removing the popunder code fixes this issue immediately but unfortunately this is an important income stream to pay for hosting and it can’t be cut out.

Are you aware of this issue, is it just me? can anything be done?

    Looking forward to a response.

    Hello Hentaipulse,

please send over a link to your site where we can see this in action, or send over the ad code you are using and will have a look.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hi, the site and ads are both in the adult catergory, is it okay to post that?

    Hello Hentaipulse,

you can send it over, we will remove the link before publishing.

    Thanks,
    Martin

And here are some examples of popunder codes that cause this problem:

    AdMaven:

    PopAds:

Currently have the popads code active so it’s easier to test, guaranteed to happen with that one.

    Hello Hentaipulse,

I’m not getting any ads out of these, could you please put them up on your website for one post only?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Hentaipulse,

here’s what I’m getting – I come to the site, I see the video player. I click it to play, but it doesn’t play the video, I get a new browser tab instead. I close that one, come back to the tab with the video and then it starts to load. However it won’t load as Google Chrome on my mobile is complaining that: “DOMException: play() can only be initiated by a user gesture.”

Is there any code which detect the user coming back to the browser tab and playing the video then? If so, then it can’t work like this on a mobile. The video playback must be initiated with a real user click.

Is your ad company doing this? What video players do they really support? Are they sure they can do this on mobile?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    >Is there any code which detect the user coming back to the browser tab and playing the video then?

I’ve no idea, my code knowledge is very limited.

The thing is this happens with all popunder codes I’ve tried, from multiple different ad companies, and as far as I know they support mobile. It works fine with JWPlayer and some others I’ve tried, but they come with their own problems and I just really like FV Player so far. I’m currently in contact with an ad company about this issue as well, to see if they can do something about it with their code.

Would giving you admin access so you can poke around a bit help at all? Like I said my code knowledge is very limited.

    Hello Hentaipulse,

so the ad unit (browser popup window) which I saw was the popunder ad, or is that something else that I haven’t described in my post?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    hentaipulse 8 years ago

Yes correct, that is the popunder ad.

    Hello Hentaipulse,

We do provide paid support where we check your site directly: http://foliovision.com/pro-support

However in this case you should be getting in touch with your ad company and ask them if their script is doing something with Flowplayer – like trying to start the video playback after the popup is really opened to make sure users with ad blockers don’t get the video playing. In that case they should be excluding the mobile users from this kind of ad detection or making sure they have it setup the same for JW Player and Flowplayer.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hello, just wanted to say that the issue has been more or less solved. I was in contact with one of the ad companies that served pop ads about this issue as well, and they made their code work in a way so that it doesn’t trigger when someone hits the play button, and that solved it.

    Thanks for the help!
