WordPress 6.3.2 HLS playback issues

[Solved]

  • Gillian W. 1 year, 6 months ago

    Via Email from WordPress:
WordPress has a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, FV Player Pro.

When seeking help with this issue, you may be asked for some of the following information:
    WordPress version 6.3.2
Active theme: Twenty Twenty-Three (version 1.2)
Current plugin: FV Player Pro (version 7.5.35.7212)
    PHP version 7.4.33

Please help. I don’t have any idea what all this means, but our customers are waiting to watch the videos.

    Best wishes,
    Andy

I have since found that the issue doesn’t arise on my 2017 iMac Pro if I view on Chrome or Firefox, but a customer reported that the problem was still there on Chrome, when he used his older iPad (he was able to watch the videos a few days ago).
He was able to watch on a newer iPad but didn’t mention the browser.
Unfortunately, when we switched to Chrome and Firefox, the picture was very bad. Despite the quality setting being Auto, it was stuck on 180p.
I had to refresh the page several times before the picture improved to 1080p (via the Auto setting).
Obviously this is not something we can expect paying customers to do.
The situation is URGENT, and I’m frustrated that we are unable to get any help from Foliovision outside office hours.
Here we are 16.5 hours after my first post, and still no word from you.
We would be willing to pay more if we could get more reliable support…
We have FV Player on another website, where some public videos play fine on Safari, Firefox and Chrome.

As a last resort, and in the absence of any communication from Foliovision (are you still in business)?
I restored a backup of our website from 14th October (prior to the WordPress 6.3.2 update – and FV Player 7.5.41.7212 update).
Videos are working normally, but we have lost valuable new member information.

    Hello Andy,

Unfortunately there was a bug in FV Player Pro 7.5.41 beta. We did not notice that it breaks the wp-admin -> FV Player screen (which you might be using to add new videos) as all our video playback tests as well as a general wp-admin test have passed. We are sorry about the inconvenience and will consider adding more wp-admin tests.

Are you sure it affected video playback too? Please let us know.

FV Player Pro 7.5.42 beta released today will fix that issue. Once you upgrade to it,you will see a popup of the Beta changes in it – please see if you need any of these, otherwise you can switch to the Release version.

    Thanks,
    Martin

The reason I posted here was because our customers (and ourselves) were unable to watch videos on the Safari browser.
A customer later reported that he was unable to watch via Chrome on his older iPad. When I checked my iPhone 6, I found I couldn’t watch our videos on Chrome or Safari.
Many of our customers are farmers who tend to have older devices – we still sell training DVDs to others.

It appears to be working now, but on my iMac Pro, the videos jump onto the lowest quality setting (when set to Auto).
This gives a bad picture. If you reload the page, it starts on HD again, but jumps to the lowest (SD) setting again.
I will restore this morning’s backup until it’s corrected.
(Our internet speed was 558Mbps this morning).

    Hello Andy,

Now I see you did mention these playback issues occurred for your customers too in your second message. I’m not sure how that could happen.

I tried your “Join Now!” video on https://workingsheepdog.co.uk/online-sheepdog-training-videos-preview-tb/ with Safari 17.0 and I got the “html5: Video file not found” error.

Please disable wp-admin -> FV Player -> Settings -> Stream Loader -> Speed-up. It’s a special settings which makes the videos faster to load, but it can run into some compatibility issues.

Like right now – the reason why it won’t play on your site is the latest WordPress version 6.3.2. It seems it added a new function which is now required to call in our short WordPress load (SHORTINIT). That’s quite unusual, WordPress ads new features on the 6.x releases, but not on 6.3.x.

I’ll look into why our automated testing did not warn us about this issue.

There were no changes related to how the video quality selection works. Once the video plays, I’ll check what kind of CDN you are using.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I disabled the Stream Loader “Speed up” and then cleared the Cloudfront Cache (using the button in “Stream Loader”.
I noticed that the “Speed up” checkbox was then re-checked, so I unchecked it again and saved the changes.
The videos are hosted on Amazon S3 via CloudFront.

Videos appear to be playing normally now.

    Hello Andy,

I found that that code change in WordPress 6.3.2 did break the HLS files served by FV Player Pro Stream Loader when using the “Speed up” option.

But it would only cause issues with Safari and only if the website was configured to show PHP warnings or notices.

If your customer reported issues with Chrome, then it was probably Chrome on iPad or iPhone which is technically the same browser as Safari when running on these devices.

A fix for this was put into FV Player Pro 7.5.43 which is now released. We also set it to not show any warnings or notices to make it more resilient.

The PHP error which you received on your email was no related to these playback issues.

    Thanks,
    Martin
