FV Pro Error Causing “Critical Error” Regardless Of Updates

[Solved]

    Since 3 updates ago, I’ve been getting critical error for me and customers. When I delete the plugin the website works flawlessly, but when I reinstall it because people want to watch videos…the critical error comes back.

    Anyone else finding this issue?

    This has happened on WP 6.4 and previous Hello Elementor 3.0 and continued to current versions.

    WordPress version 6.5
    Active theme: Hello Elementor (version 3.0.1)
    Current plugin: FV Player Pro (version 7.5.46.7212)
    PHP version 7.4.33

    Hello Zach,

    Does the error occur while updating FV Player or FV Player Pro?

    Do you just get a white screen while trying to perform the update in wp-admin?

    Please try to deactivate FV Player Pro before updating FV Player.

    Please let us know if you got the WordPress “Your Site is Experiencing a Technical Issue” email too. It will contain valuable information about why the error occurred.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

    I have deleted FV Pro and the site works. Shortly after I install Pro it throws a critical error. I’ve tried to update both to the latest version, even FV…it will allow the site to work ok without playing videos, but once I have FV plugin install Pro…back to critical error.

    Here’s the critical error email info (I’ve removed website domain on purpose since this is kind of public):

    Howdy!

    WordPress has a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

    In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, FV Player Pro.

    When seeking help with this issue, you may be asked for some of the following information:
    WordPress version 6.5.3
    Active theme: Hello Elementor (version 3.0.1)
    Current plugin: FV Player Pro (version 7.5.46.7212)
    PHP version 7.4.33

    =========
    I am willing to forward the full email to you/your team that has the specifics of the error, but I would rather not share it in a public forum.

    I also use FV Player & Pro on a different website and did NOT update them to the newest versions and that website is ok and doesn’t have critical errors.

    Hello Zach,

    Thank you for forwarding the email, here’s the important part:

    An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 564 of the file .../wp-content/wp-content/plugins/fv-player-pro/fp-api-private.php. Error message: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function get_plugin_data() in .../wp-content/wp-content/plugins/fv-player-pro/fp-api-private.php:564
    Stack trace:
    #0 .../wp-content/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(324): FV_Player_Pro_Foliopress_Plugin_Private->changelog_filter()
    #1 .../wp-content/wp-includes/plugin.php(205): WP_Hook->apply_filters()
    #2 .../wp-content/wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php(234): apply_filters()
    #3 .../wp-content/wp-content/plugins/security-malware-firewall/lib/CleantalkSP

    It suggests that the “Security & Malware scan by CleanTalk” plugin might be doing some plugin update checks in front-end. And in FV Player Pro we filter the changelog text when the plugin updates are checked, but the get_plugin_data() function is not loaded in front-end.

    Please deactivate and delete the FV Player Pro plugin you are using, then hit “Install Pro extension” at the top of the wp-admin -> FV Player -> Settings screen.

    That will give you the FV Player Pro plugin with the fix.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thank you Martin. I had pro uninstalled for a while unfortunately but I installed it as you recommended last week. So far so good.

    It’s weird because I’ve tried that a few times in the past and it would just critical error within an hour or so…but this time it didn’t. Maybe there was an update from when I last installed it. 🤷‍♂️
