FV Player javascript error if page has Jetpack gallery

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › FV Player javascript error if page has Jetpack gallery

  • Kobus 8 years, 7 months ago

    Hi guys

FV Player works well on posts that have a normal photo added with the insert media button. However, if the post contains a tiled gallery from Jetpack (https://jetpack.com/support/tiled-galleries/) FV Player do not play the video. Instead, the following error appears:

    Admin JavaScript warning:
I’m sorry, your JavaScript appears to be broken. Please use “Check template” in plugin settings, read our troubleshooting guide, troubleshooting guide for programmers or order our pro support and we will get it fixed for you.

The gallery still functions normally by displaying the full image in a modal popup. FV Player works correctly on ny other post that does not have a gallery.

    Please see http://maroelamedia.co.za/vreemdhede/fotos-vir-altyd-n-vriend-in-die-gans/ and http://maroelamedia.co.za/vermaak/televisie/video-zoid-en-ard-matthews-skop-republiek-met-mening-af/

Do you have any suggestions for what we can do to fix this please?

    Best regards
    Kobus

    Hello Kobus,

in general we don’t recommend using JetPack because of its WordPress.com integration – unless that’s what you really need. There are good alternatives for most of its functions which don’t tie you down like that.

Since you are our pro user I checked your site and I can see the error:

tiled-gallery.js?x74069:163 Uncaught ReferenceError: wp is not defined(…)

Does it appear when you remove FV Player from that post and only keep the gallery? If so, then it’s Jetpack’s fault. Otherwise it must be some strange conflict.

In that case you can try to modify that //cdn.foliovision.com/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/tiled-gallery/tiled-gallery/tiled-gallery.js file and comment out the block at line 163. If you are experienced in JavaScript, it won’t be a problem, just remember to clear any cache – your browser, CDN and so on.

If you would like us to get this fixed for you with priority, you can order our Pro support: http://foliovision.com/pro-support

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin

    Thank you for the feedback.

I do not understand the issue with integrating with WordPress.com. Please describe the problem that causes your resentment towards the Jetpack plugin.

You shouldn’t advise the WordPress community to modify plugin files, because changes will be lost on update.

I’ll contact Jetpack support for further support on this issue. Thank you for having a look.

    Best regards

    Hello Kobus,

please don’t misunderstand, I’m not recommending that you modify the plugin files as a permanent fix. I’m only suggesting that in case you are a web developer as a quick fix to see if it helps. If it would help, your bug report to JetPack would be more detailed. However just telling them at while line the error is occurring in what file should be enough.

We don’t like our sites to be bound with some functionality to external services, like for example WordPress.com. If you are using a lot of the JetPack functions, it might be working well for you. We also don’t recommend themes which have built-in functions which make it hard to change to a different theme later.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Kobus,

    Jetpack does several things wrong:

    • bundles dozens of plugins together, forcing a site to carry megabytes of dangerous code (Jetpack has had security issues this year).
    • encourages people to use second rate plugins instead of best of breed.
    • calls home incessantly (Jetpack is basically spyware)
    • uses unfair advantage (no one else except Automattic would get away with this kind of bundling in the WordPress directory)

Jetpack is entirely against the spirit of open source. Jetpack is cheating by Automattic and an attempt to reduce all of WordPress to serviceware (pay to play). WordPress was built by all of us (we’ve been building WordPress for over ten years) to provide a platform independent publishing tool, not commercial serviceware.

I hope the above short summary helps you understand why Foliovision holds Jetpack in contempt.

Your point that we should be compatible with Jetpack though is a good one. We follow all WordPress core conventions in our software to maximise compatibility. We build and maintain very sophisticated commercial sites who sometimes have dozens of plugins so we’ve always focused on compatibility first.

    Hi Martin and Alec

Thank you for clarifying and explaining your thoughts about Jetpack and WordPress.com.

I have to say, if it wasn’t for Photon, the traffic on our site would be 65% higher and we would need to beef up our cluster of 5 VPSs to serve our 1 million visitors per month even more.

The other components of Jetpack are useful as well and I trust the coding standards applied in the plugin.

It wasn’t my intention to start a debate and I will certainly take your concerns to hart.

    Thank you for the support!

    Hi Kobus,

    You’re welcome for the support.

I appreciate your issues with server performance. KeyCDN is very inexpensive with no minimums at .04¢/GB. If you turn off JetPack you may find that your sites run faster.

Trusting Automattic or Jetpack is like trusting Google: extremely naive. When you aren’t paying for the product, you are the product. Your site and your users are being datamined, your business is being made dependent on a free service which can be taken away at any time.

Inexpensive services I like (Vimeo for instances). Free services I do not. Freestanding free software is the only free which is really free.

Jetpack is single handedly setting out to undermine freestanding WordPress and the independent developers who have made WordPress great. It’s not the core at WordPress which is of value (still fairly mediocre starting from spaghetti code a decade ago). It’s the always been the plugins and the plugin authors who make WordPress an ecosystem worth using.

You can’t say what I’ve said publicly about Jetpack or the moderators ban you at both WordPress.org and/or WPtavern. That’s how Jetpack manages to maintain some semblance of a positive reputation. That’s how Matt Mullenweg and Automattic roll. Hijacking the project we all helped build, suppressing dissent.

Making the web work for you, Alec
