403 error when trying to play Amazon S3 videos

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › 403 error when trying to play Amazon S3 videos

  • John Davis 9 years, 1 month ago

    Hi,

I am having problems embedding a video stored as protected content in Amazon S3.

I have followed (and double-checked) all the steps in your guide, but when trying to play a video, I get the following issue:

Amazon S3: The request signature we calculated does not match the signature you provided. Check your key and signing method. unable to determine file format.
    Plugin version: 6.0.4.12
    Time Taken: 0.200991868973
    HTTP Response: 403

If I set the file’s permission to ‘everyone’ in the Amazon bucket, and remove the Amazon S3 Protected Content settings from your plugin in WordPress, the file plays. So the issue cannot be with the file itself.

I have double-checked both the settings in the plugin, the access key, secret access key, and that the user in S3 has the appropriate policy. I have even removed the user and created it again, naming it both MySite and CreativeScreenwriting (the name of our website), just in case that made a difference, but nothing has helped. So both myself and our web designer are at a loss.

We have another plugin on the same site which successfully backs up files to our Amazon bucket using another access a nd secret access key, so it can’t be anyhing on our host-server side of things.

Is there anything you can do to help? I really want to use your plugin, but have come to a dead end!

    Thanks,

    John

    Hi John!

The problem you described (error 403, unable to determine file format, access to video forbidden) typically means that there is a problem with credentials. Please make sure you copied and entered access keys in the right field and that the bucket name matches the one in AWS settings. You can also try to set a new pair just to be sure you have the right ones copied.

As you wrote you already tested that if the video is public it plays. Then the problem should be with the security credentials.

Let us know if that worked!

    Thanks!

    Hi Lucia,

I’ve created several pairs of keys, double-checking them, but without success. I also tried removing the user entirely and creating a new one, and also adding a new bucket in your plugin rather than editing the details of the first one, in case they weren’t overwriting, but no luck.

I am pasting the full error message below, in case that is of any help. One thing I did notice is that the access key in the url matches, but the signature is not the same as the ‘secret access key’ entered in your plugin. Is that relevant?

It is frustrating, as the process seems simple enough, and should be working – perhaps I’m missing something obvious?

Here is the full error message from checking video:

    Mime Type: application/xml

    unable to determine file format
    Plugin version: 6.0.4.12

    Thanks for your continued help,

    John

    Hi John!

I’m sorry to hear that you have so much trouble setting this up. Amazon S3 is great way of protecting your videos but it is a bit complex.

From the error message I see that mime type is not correct. It needs to have value video/the format of the file you are using (mp4, webm…). Please check our guide how to set it up properly. Unfortunately encoding your videos can be a bit tricky in the beginning.

You can also use our hands-on Pro support and we will set everything up for you and make sure it works as it should.

    Lucia
