Play external audio files (translations) along with video?

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › Play external audio files (translations) along with video?

  • Girish M. 11 months, 1 week ago

We have hundreds of videos with audio translations that we offer to many countries, so there is always the request for adding/changing translations.
We use encrypted HLS files, any change in an audio translation requires a complete new encoding of the project.
However, subtitles are much easier to handle.
It is my dream since long time to find a way to play an external audio file along with the video, like a subtitle file!
Am I the only one wanting this?

    Hello Girish,

It seems this would introduce too many sync issues. The HLS stream and the audio track would surely not start at the same time. So then the audio track would have to sync with the video periodically.

I’ll check with Alec if he has any ideas.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Girish and Michael,

We’ve thought about this. We can do it. In this way you could add 12 different new audio tracks between which the visitor could switch.

I’ll contact you directly about custom development participation.

Thanks for being part of Foliovision!

Hope this is not forgotten? The feature of additional audio translation tracks as external files (like subtitles) is something that would help us incredibly.
    Greetings

Wait, you are correct NOT to implement this feature!

We found out how we can encode (in AWS MediaConvert) an additional audio track and add it in the manifest file without touching the video encoding.
So this problem is solved now in a satisfying way.
If someone has the same problem, let me know.
    Greetings
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

I hope all is well with you. How goes it with the multiple audio translation tracks? Are you satisfied with your solution? Is there any way we could make it easier?

Yes, the translation tracks work fine and the process is not too complicated. If you want detailed description how to create them in AWS MediaConvert, let me know.

Michael, that’s great news. I’d love to hear in more detail how you create them with AWS MediaConvert and then how you manage them afterwards.

To create the additional audio track in AWS MediaConvert (web interface), do the following:

    Specify MP3 file.
    Deselect Video Selector.
    Audio Selector: Leave default settings.
    Output group:
    Apple HLS: Leave default settings.
Enable DRM encryption, specify static key of related video file, specify key provider URL of video file (!).
    Otherwise, leave default settings.

Now hook up the additional audio in the manifest files:
Somewhere in the chain of m3u8 files there is the list of audios, in the form:

    #EXT-X-MEDIA:TYPE=AUDIO,GROUP-ID="audiogroupid",LANGUAGE="fra",NAME="French",AUTOSELECT=YES,DEFAULT=NO,CHANNELS="2",URI="T01_L03fr.m3u8"

In this list, add the newly created audio, for example:

    #EXT-X-MEDIA:TYPE=AUDIO,GROUP-ID="audiogroupid",LANGUAGE="zho",NAME="Chinese",AUTOSELECT=YES,DEFAULT=NO,CHANNELS="2",URI="PK-Theme1-Lecture3-h_1-test.m3u8"

where these m3u8 files contain the links to the audio chunks.
In this way, the additional audio will be recognized by the fvplayer as audio track.

    Hope this helps!
