play vimeo HLS videos

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › play vimeo HLS videos

We are trying to protect our videos from being downloaded by our users. We’re using Vimeo for business and currently their player just embeds a mp4 file which you can just lookup in the html source and then download.

Is it possible to use the FV WordPress Flowplayer to show Vimeo HLS streams on desktop and mobile?

I found this github project which suggest is possible, however I can’t get it to work yet: https://github.com/mangui/flashls/releases/tag/v0.3.5

    Hello Paul,

thank you for the suggestion of a HLS player for non-Safari and non-iOS browsers.

However if you use Vimeo, you can use our integration which works with both Vimeo Plus and Vimeo Pro accounts. It uses Vimeo media URLs which are time limited, to it prevents users from downloading the videos as well.

Here’s how to set it up: https://foliovision.com/player/how-to-use-vimeo-pro

I see that using HLS might provide another level of pretection against download though, if that’s what you are after.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Paul!

We have now support for Vimeo HLS streams with Pro Version. For even better protection check our solution for encrypted HLS where a user – even if you download video files they won’t play without the required deciphering key which only your site can control.

That’s great! When I’m using the HLS links in Vimeo, I’m not seeing the speed control buttons right now. Are the speed control buttons compatible with HLS?

    Hi John!

What device and browser are you using? I have tested on Mac (OS X10.11.4) and Safari 9.1 plus iPad (iOS 8.1.2) and speed buttons work for me well.

    Thank you!

    Hi John,

For now HLS is not compatible with speed controls. I expect that will change over the course of the next year as HLS becomes more mainstream. For now, for videos where speed controls are important please don’t use HLS.

    Thanks.
