how to specify line breaks for a transcript in a vtt file?

    I’ve been able to get the basic functionality of the interactive transcript working, but is there a way to indicate line breaks, as with lines of dialogue? As it is, the transcript displays lines of dialogue all together in a single paragraph… though it seems to make a paragraph break about every 30-35 seconds. Here’s an excerpt of my .vtt file:

    20
    00:00:44.043 --> 00:00:44.876
    Hello Bill.

    21
    00:00:44.876 --> 00:00:45.996
    <v William>Pleasure to meet you.</v>

    22
    00:00:45.996 --> 00:00:48.017
    <v ->Thank you, come on, sit down and let's talk.</v>

    23
    00:00:48.017 --> 00:00:49.958
    Hey Charlie, got a couple of Pepsis here for us?

    24
    00:00:49.958 --> 00:00:51.112
    <v Charlie>Pepsi's right here.</v>

    25
    00:00:51.112 --> 00:00:53.163
    <v Faye>Thanks, Charlie.</v>
    <v Charlie>Yes ma'am.</v>

    Hello Curt,

    I was looking at the specs of VTT here: https://www.w3.org/TR/webvtt1/#introduction-multiple-lines

    So each cue in the VTT file should be displayed as a separate paragraph and linebreaks in each cue should be displayed too.

    In FV Player Pro this works a bit differently as you noted. The idea is that if you have a lot of short individual entries in VTT they form a bigger paragraph. It also checks for the full sentences. That keeps the text condensed and it’s generally better if you just take some subtitle file and use it as a transcript.

    If we would really show each cue in VTT as a separate paragraph the transcript would appear much longer and it would be harder to read. But I see that for dialogues it would be better.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin, thanks for the explanation – I now have a better sense of what’s going on. If I understand correctly, FV Player Pro is automating the line/paragraph breaks; for my purposes, that’s unfortunate, since my content consists sometimes of paragraph-style narration, and sometimes short lines of dialogue. It makes sense to have a lot of short cues for subtitles, but transcripts can be different – I often have a cue of only about every 15 seconds for narration, but much more often for dialogue, and I need to be able to allow for the difference.

    Perhaps at some point there could be a toggle for whether FV Player checks for sentences etc., or whether it just goes strictly by the cues? Otherwise I’m not sure I’ll be able to use it after all. :(

    Hello Curt,

    I see your point. Perhaps we can add a global setting for this.

    Thanks,
    Martin
