Apply a time limit to video playback

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › How to … › Apply a time limit to video playback

  • Donald P. 10 years, 11 months ago

Is there any way to apply a time limit to a video? For example, we have a live RTMP stream that we show our subscribers using FV FlowPlayer. We would like to embed that same live feed in our landing pages, but restrict it to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes the video would stop playing and just display a message encouraging them to signup or something like that.

    Is that possible?

    Thanks,

    Don

    Hello Don,

this is doable and it’s on our list, however we want to do it so that it’s very intuitive for the users.

Could you please explain more about your sign-up procedure? Do you use any membership plugin (does it support return URL for user once he joins?) or subscription service (does it support callback in JavaScript?)?

    Thanks,
    Martin

This post was 2 years ago. What was the result of this work ? Did this feature ever make it into a release ? I ask because I need this feature as well.

    Hello Miles,

a very simple feature like this would be doable, but it wouldn’t protect the full length video from downloading.

So we strongly recommend to store a trailer for the full length video as a separate file and give non-members access to that file only.

Are you interested in a nicely integrated Pay Per View system or are you looking for a way of performing a custom action (such as showing some signup form, or redirecting to a custom page) at a given point of video?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Martin,

The video is protected via S3 and Cloudfront. So I’m not worried about security at this point. You can only see the video from that page. There’s no realistic way that you can grab the stream from Cloudfront unless you spoof the credentials which will only last as long as the video has time and only that one user. So I’m not worried.

I have an integrated pay per view system, finally. I just need the video to stop at a certain point, and for the video not to be seen any further.

I am a pro user of your software as it is, and your feature of custom start/end time and that seems to be working just fine. However, I was hoping that the feature could be it’s own feature of the software that you had developed. That you only want to show X to Y portion of the video ?

Clearly that’s not the case….or is it ?

    Hello Miles,

the custom start/end time is a FV Player Pro feature which allows you limit what portion of the video can be viewed, but it has some limitations.

For a pay per view system it would be better is the video length would show unaffected – giving the viewer an impression he’s about to see the full video and then ask for payment at a given time.

However serving the full length videos for previews is something we can’t recommend. Protecting the videos against hotlinking with S3 and CloudFront is not enough. You should be serving just a preview of the full length video which you can create in your favorite video editing software.

    Thanks,
    Martin
